VANCOUVER | Kitsilano: The city's most livable neighbourhood? (Part II)

Alright, after much delay I have finally got around to posting the second half of my Kitsilano trek.

You can see Part I here…
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=211765

To refresh your memories, I'm starting Part II where I left off at the end of Part I - Broadway and Arbutus, heading east towards Burrard:

Some of the residential found down the nearby side streets. I wouldn't exactly call this one typical of Kitsilano, but it is home to quite a random assortment of housing types…

Turning down Burrard Street. This particular stretch has been cemented as the main luxury car strip in the city in recent years.

Main building in the background is the Seaforth Highlanders Armoury (undergoing renovations) and Molson Brewery nextdoor to the left...

Turning west down 1st I wander into one of the small pockets of retail outside the neighbourhood's main commercial drags of West 4th and Broadway...

A short walk away and I'm on Cornwall, the main drag along Kits Beach…

Looking towards Kits Beach...

Heading up Yew - the anchor street of the Kits Beach bar scene - connecting Cornwall with West 4th, one of the city's destination retail strips…

Some more typical Kits heritage homes, except these were incorporated into an apartment building a few decades ago. This particular stretch is West 3rd, which has one of the few original brick streets that are still left in the city. For whatever reason though, only half the street has the brick remaining.

West 4th - once the heart of Vancouver's hippie scene in the 60s, but little evidence of that left...

The Naam - Vancouver's oldest remaining vegetarian restaurant and one of the last few reminders of West 4th's hippie history...

Some new infill…

And back where I started…

That's all!

Excellent tour.

I see you snapped a shot of Peaceful Restaurant. With a humble exterior like that, you'd never know it's considered by many to be one of the best Chinese restaurants in Canada.

Such an outstanding looking neighborhood. The PNW has a solid grasp on urban planning for livable cities from Vancouver down to Portland. Didn't get to visit this area last time I was in Vancouver but it's on my list for the next trip! Thanks for sharing!

I've heard Vancouver has astronomical property prices, so in that sense it's almost unliveable, despite its charm.

Overall pretty cool photos. It's a North American city but feels quite different from a US city. References to Europe or European sports, the predominance of white people (and perhaps Asians) but no dark races visible in the pictures, and the lack of American chains all set it apart from typical US cities.

Yup... BUT also incredible.

It is our San Fran meets LA meets Seattle.

You can rent or buy ^in many areas that are reasonably affordable.

Nice photos, raggedy. Why don't you post in the Vancouver sub forum anymore?

Kits is one of the few predominantly white (traditionally Greek) neighbourhoods left. Vancouver is very racially diverse, and not nearly as segregated (culturally or financially) as most US cities. Here's a somewhat old pie chart

And you are right about cost of living.

Cool! Thanks for the shots of Kitsinalo!

It´s incredible to see so much people at the beach and snow on the mountains in the background.

Lovely area. It looks very liveable, full of life.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain.

Just got back from Vancouver and, yeah, Kitsilano is great. Affordable? Not for mere mortals but otherwise very livable.

Thanks for the tour.
