Great photo ER..!

If you look closely up-channel [the above photo], you can see the old Pontoon Bridge. That's the one that took millions of cars from Long Beach to Terminal Island which we see at the left. I traveled across it many times.

At the left we also see the landing for the Spruce Goose plane. Hughes built a huge hanger over the Goose and there it sat for over 45 years....never to see the outside even once during that time. Those 45 years of storage cost Hughes millions of dollars. Why? He was a very eccentric and a weird guy.

Today the pontoon bridge, plane, Mr. Hughes and the old noir hanger are gone.

It appears that the Pacific Electric Railway had to drop their wires at his location as evidenced by the tower car seen just below the rear of the fuselage.

Bouton. Here it is on an 1888 California State Irrigation Map:

And there is still a Bouton Lake, at the Lakewood Country Club. The City of Lakewood website says Bouton Lake was formed in 1895 when drilling operations opened up an artesian well: http://www.lakewoodcity.org/news/dis...asp?NewsID=170

There are still huge supplies of underground fresh water near Compton. Many of the cities near Compton do not need to import water because of the dozens of local water wells. Add to that the fact that the local well water is of excellent quality.

I have friends near that area and have seen water flow right up to the surface.

I can only surmise that General Edward Bouton (1834-1921), who owned quite a bit of land in the area, planned on developing the area platted out on the 1888 map, but hitting the artesian wells in 1895 flooded the area and created the lake.

Thanks FW. It's rather intriguing to know that the bottom of the lake is laid out in lots. It reminds me of the submerged village in
W.G. Sebald's Austerlitz.

-earlier tonight I came across this interesting 1959 slide.

-trying to figure out the address, I searched under 'florists' in the 1956 city directory since the 'plants' sign is prominent. Eventually I found a Germain's...but as a pet shop at 625 S. Hill Street. I looked at the slide again and decided the window display does look a bit like a pet shop.

...then I noticed 'Snafu Coffee Shop' several lines below Germain's in the directory and remembered this photograph I posted here last week.

At first I thought the 'Transocean Air Lines' office was the old 'Germains Pet Shop' space. -but the addresses don't seem to add up.
Now (after a few beers) I am completely c o n f u s e d!

It's great to see that slide and in color! Germain's went in 625-627 S. Hill in 1937, opening May 24. It's the 2-story building we've seen before next to the Banker's Building. 1926 to 1934 it had housed Polly's Cheerio Tearoom upstairs; Joe Pirrone took it over for a nightspot after that but not for long. Downstairs was a National Shirt Shops & New York Hardware Co. store. Germains gave it a streamline moderne makeover when they moved in. They also had a retail shop in the Kerckhoff Building (since 1918).

This one's been posted before - you can just see the "G" to the right.
