Curitiba Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system

I like trams better than buses, but I thought this was interesting

Lessons from a South American Bus Rapid Transit system

particularly how highly customised it is, with e.g. boarding through sealed stations, so that riders have already paid before they get on the bus.

Jaime Lerner sings of the city

"Jaime Lerner reinvented urban space in his native Curitiba, Brazil. Along the way, he changed the way city planners worldwide see what’s possible in the metropolitan landscape."

Great speaker and amazing presentation. I love his ideas... less cars (a guess that won't leave.... lol.. so true) and acting quickly with less planning.

Curitiba has a planned transportation system, which includes lanes on major streets devoted to a bus rapid transit system. The buses are long, split into three sections (bi-articulated), and stop at designated elevated tubes, complete with disabled access. There is only one price no matter how far you travel and you pay at the bus stop.[53]

The system, used by 85% of Curitiba's population, is the source of inspiration for the TransMilenio in Bogotá, Colombia; Metrovia in Guayaquil, Ecuador; Transmetro in Guatemala City, Guatemala; as well as the Orange Line of Los Angeles, U.S. State of California, and for a future transportation system in Panama City, Panama as well as Cebu City, Philippines.
