A little more Mimi...

Where all the trophies came from--don't know if Mimi bagged any herself, but she was along for the ride (not sure where the sport is in shooting a huge animal on the ground with a high-powered rifle--how much skill could it take in comparison to duck, quail grouse etc etc)

Was curious about J. Robert Harris--other of his designs also still stand:

I don't believe we have seen this John Humble photograph on nla.

Indiana Street at Brooklyn Avenue / East Los Angeles Jine 26, 1987.

John Humble

The Marlboro sign is still there (covered up), as well as the building with Fidel painted on it. (and the house directly behind it)

I tried to match the Humble photo

GSV

Fidel / Marlboro Sign / Old House (slow day in the ethereal household)

GSV

You can check out the corner yourself HERE

If you swivel your head around you'll see this monument (directly behind John Humble when he took his photograph back in 1987)

gsv

We have talked about this thing at length but for the life of me I can't remember what it's memorializing.

I SHOULDN'T HAVE CALLED IT A 'THING' ...but you have to admit it's a bit ugly.

You originally posted about the 'mystery' monument in post #31899, e_r and MichaelRyerson answered in post #32029:

How appropriate.
There's more on Los Cinco Puntos at www.laconservancy.org, including:
Additionally, Los Cinco Puntos/Five Points Memorial contains two plots honoring Mexican American veterans of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Together, these two memorials—Morin Square Memorial and War Memorial—pay tribute to the strong presence of the veteran community in the Eastside.
BTW, e_r, did you notice that there's still a taco truck on Indiana, only a few yards from the one in your 1987 Humble photo.

I'm looking forward to my copy :-)

As this preview relates, Archibald Gillespie has a lot to answer for. His actions led to the battle of San Pasqual:

"In this state of affairs, with the country completely disrupted, the means of communication cut off by the enemy (the American forces), the ports occupied by warships, etc.—such being the times, I stayed in Los Angeles and chose a wife. I got married, and after a couple of months became seriously ill with fever. During my convalescence, one night a squadron came whose arms I could hear clinking from one of the rooms. They knocked on the door. My wife opened it and two American officers asked for me. My wife was scared and said that I wasn’t there. On hearing this, he said not to deny it. I got out of bed and went to meet these men. I invited them in, and they very carefully explained to me the order to arrest me that they had received from military commander Gillespie. After having obtained permission from the officers, I changed my clothes. I left with them after they had searched my home. We went to Gillespie, who asked me questions about Ramon Carrillo, whom I had helped escape. I replied that I had not seen Carrillo since I had separated from Don Jose Castro. His response was for me to be thrown into the calaboose from which I would not be released until I informed them of Ramon Carrillo’s whereabouts. The officers shoved me out and took me to a lockup adjoining headquarters. They removed a drunk Indian to put me there. They took a blanket off the Indian and threw it over me so that I could cover myself with it; later on, they brought me a wooden table. They had me there a number of days (about thirty), despite the efforts of leading townsmen; but the officers who had arrested me pleaded with Gillespie and managed to get me out under their bond; and then, after removing my shackles, allowed me to stay in their quarters"

I wonder why it was necessary to file a separate permit two days later.

LADBSDOC.LACITY

for "Reinforced concrete floor under loggia and flooring and beam under garage."

Why the necessity for a second permit?

The swimming pool and 'spa' weren't put in until 1955. [OWNERS MR. & MRS. KEITH WEEKS]

This is probably nothing, but I spotted something suspicious in the pool plans.

Could that be Mimi?

nope, I didn't notice the other truck Hoss.

but it has occurred to me while doing 'before & after' pics
how shocking it would be..if..say,.that girl on the corner in Humble's
photograph would still be waiting to cross the street in the GSV thirty years later.

same age
same clothes
same shopping bags

You know, twilight zone stuff.

[THE YEAR IS MISSING FROM THE DESCRIPTION]

JOHN HUMBLE

Any 'car people' want to wager a guess what year this might be?

The brick apt building that looks a little worse for wear in Humble's photo is lookin' good these days! You can check it out HERE.

Not a car person, but my guess is 1984. The Wells Fargo Building is complete and it looks like the building at 801 Grand is under construction. It was completed in 1985.

I not sure if we've seen this site before here, but it has a pretty good graphical representation of build dates.

Many thanks, t2!

Los Angeles and its environs are the site of so much in this book. It used to surprise me how involved L.A. usually was in old California happenings: So many events came to a head in or around greater L.A. Our fascinating focus here at NLA is on metropolis L.A., not pueblo L.A.! But I think the spirits of pueblo L.A. stand fast and still exert their subtle influence on those who followed; and we profit much by getting to know these pueblo spirits and their context a little better . . .

'mystery' location

seller's description:

"VINTAGE 1944 CAT photo / Los Angeles SAILOR Boards Kitten in Expensive pet Hotel"

FOUND ON EBAY EARLIER THIS YEAR

Often times sellers on ebay create false narratives for their photograph to make them more enticing to buyers. I think this might be an example.

Is that really a hotel that accepts pets? or just a building
(of course the seller might have had additional snapshots that fill in the narrative)

Does anyone remember when the old RKO sound stage was painted with these garish colors? (at least that truck matches)

I still can't get over that the tower on top of the globe is gone.
I wish it would have been protected like the old neon signs downtown.

If anyone wants to put it back, the hole is still there.

I wonder it fills with water when it rains?

as a friendly reminder to newbies...here's the tower of which I speak.

I forgot about that spikey ball on top. Does anyone know if it rotated?

(surely there's an old travelogue or 8mm film somewhere on the internet) I'll go look.
