quebec city is one of canada's great cities. top three even, maybe top five for the less-historically minded. the reduction of its national perception to "tourist town" reflects various narratives and processes.

Gorgeous pictures. The first one, of the Jesuit College, is especially beautiful.

I thought Place Bonaventure was the largest at the time. What would have been no.1?

Agreed (processes which occured both with and without Quebec City's control)... I guess this specific topic might be interesting to eventually pursue in light of the "misconceptions about your city" thread.

The following picture was taken in 1937. I love it because it clearly illustrates how massive was the footprint of the railway tracks near the port/train station.

Massive indeed, and surprising to me, I never saw Quebec as a major railway city. But it does have a large port and so it does make sense.

Yea it was the second largest commercial building after the Merchandise Mart. The Pentagon doesn't count, but is definitely larger.

St John? The official name has always been St-Jean.

Maybe he's confusing it with St-James/St-Jacques street in Montreal.

No, I was thinking of St John Steet in Quebec City - outside the walls. I had understood that that was the official name for a good part of its history, but perhaps I am mistaken. Or perhaps anglos called it St John and francos Saint-John?
