The largest mega city in the western world: São Paulo

All the following images are from the thread : "São Paulo, o poder da megalópolis" , which is in the São Paulo section of the brazilian forum in SSC, first page.

São Paulo metropolitan area is home to more than 20 million people that came from all over the world during many centuries of mass immigration to the city, which is one of the fastest growing metropolis in the world. The city has the largest japanese, italian and portuguese communities in the planet outside their countries of origin, as well as sizable spanish and german communities as well, togheter with koreans and chinese settlers, making São Paulo truly a cosmopolitan place where everything is to be found.

Starting with the JK Iguatemi complex and surrounding area.

Paulistas always like to say that SP is the largest city in the western world. NY has the same metro population.

Further, SP is a hideous dump. The office park shown in these photos is nice, but 99.999% of the city is atrocious.

Faria Lima Avenue and surrounding areas.

São Paulo´s japanese community is the largest in the world outside Japan, and its influence is notable in the cities restaurant scene, arts, culture, finances and architecture. Japanese food is very popular in Brazil, as well as japanese cars.

Shopping Cidade Jardim is a big shopping mall with all the fanciest international designers boutiques, some of them flagship and/or global stores, plus fancy restaurants, gym, VIP cinema, parking lot, office towers and residential towers.

The area around it is a beautiful low rise planned residential neighbourhood also named Cidade Jardim.

Continuing

Jardins is a planned neighbourhood targetted for the upper class, with large villas designed for wealthy families, luxury car dealers and nice stores and restaurants. Europa Avenue has many car dealers from all over the world and Oscar Freire street has nice shops. The streets are full of green and wide spaces, and most buildings are low rise in large terrains. It´s a beautiful area that was planned in the 1920´s and somehow managed to keep its charm and its upper class vibe throughout the decades. One of the nice aspects of São Paulo is that the city has dense business areas and leafy green planned neighbourhoods not very far one fron the other, somehow avoiding residents of long commutes. Also, the city mild weather, without tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes and wild fires and its neutrality that has kept the city away from wars that torned down european metropolis and asian ones and also kept it safe from terrorist attacks that affects other metropolis in the western world. All this contributed to the attraction of immigrants from all over the world as well as a magnet for foreign investment.

Europa Avenue and its fancy car dealers.

The famous Ferrari and Maserati store, which looks like a diamond. Somehow a tribute to the largest italian community outside Italy that lives and thrived in the city. A successful case of immigration. Even the accent of paulistanos, as the people from São Paulo are named, have italian influences.

While I'm not a fan of SP, some of the nice areas like around Rua Oscar Freira remind me of L.A. I like those parts.

Morumbi neighbourhood

Morumbi is a massive residential area planned in the 1950´s far from the oldest parts of the city and from the poorest parts as well, which attracted wealthy families in the following decades so far. The houses are big, many with swimming pool and lots of greenery. The streets are hilly and leafy, and there are many places for walking like small parks and green spaces. Its a very spread out area and very beautiful, with private clubs, modern soccer stadium and private schools. Reminds me of LA upper class neighbourhoods.

The beautiful Oetker Collection Hotel

Beautiful, green, spacious and with mild weather.

LA feelings in São Paulo

São Paulo is so big (the largest metro in the Americas) and so sprawled, that new business areas keep popping up in very different areas of the city. The newest business area of São Paulo is along Chucri Zaidan Avenue, and it is very modern.

Reminds me of LA this area too.

Vila Nova Conceição is a fancy neighbourhood of upper class luxurious and tall apartment buildings in european style. Remind me of some areas of Manhattan. It has lots of green.

Well I've never seen shots like those of SP. Remarkable. SP is often portrayed via aerials as a sprawl of impoverished slum-like neighbourhoods.

"A picture is worth a thousand words", unless the picture is not capturing the truth.

A lot of wealth portrayed in this huge, stunning collection. Learned a lot.

Guessing someone will post the "dark side" of SP. Thx for the tour.
