Forget Sobha contract, nothing other than allegations and counter-allegations happen in
Kerala administration. Govt has not taken a single administrative decision over past few
weeks... splendid. Only things that assures us about projects like Sobha Hitech city and
the 6 SEZs (Parsvnath, Unitech etc.) is the fact that the developers have bought the land
at market rates and are firm on it. Also there are no hindrances in sight as informally
Industies minister has mentioned during industry-IT policy declaration that these projects
will be cleared soon.

KMC.. here is confirmation of Dewa's project. Venus has won the 22 acre land as
mentioned in Dewa homepage.

Race organisers signed a Letter of Intent with Kochi on 26 April as a major first step in ongoing negotiations towards a full port agreement to host the world’s premier offshore ocean marathon which starts in Alicante, Spain, in mid-October 2008.

Kochi was among a number of Indian ports in recent discussions with organisers.

The Kochi Port Trust, which will be responsible for organising the stopover, with the full backing of the Kerala Tourism Department, welcomed the signing of the Letter of Intent and were confident that the stopover would give the port great exposure.

“India has never hosted such a prestigious sailing event and we are very excited that the Volvo Ocean Race is considering Kochi as a serious candidate for the competition,” said the Chairman of the Kochi Port Trust, Mr N. Ramachandran.

The booming shipping port on the Malabar Coast is now one of India’s foremost tourist destinations and the race stopover is sure to bring thousands of additional visitors to both Kochi and the State of Kerala.

The Kerala State Tourism Department, a principal stakeholder in the exercise, envisages the event would bring significant visibility as well as economic benefit to the region.

“Kerala Tourism sees this as an opportunity to project Kochi as an exciting destination, and we will be happy to extend all support to the Kochi Port Trust to bring the event to the State,” said Dr Venu, Secretary, Kerala Tourism.

The Yachting Association of India (YAI), an active advocate of the race coming to India, sees the hosting of a stopover as an important boost to India’s ongoing campaign to establish itself as a venue for hosting major sporting events following its successful bid to stage the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010.

“Hosting one of the world's top three sailing events will obviously boost any future bid to host major sailing as well as other sports events in India," said Commander Ajay Narang, Honorary Joint Secretary-General, YAI. “It will also be a tremendous fillip for local sailing,” he added.

Volvo Ocean Race CEO Glenn Bourke also greeted the Letter of Intent with Kochi as a significant step forward after months of discussions. “India has hundreds of millions of enthusiastic sports fans and we know they will enjoy this challenging race, with its passion, teamwork, adventure and excitement.”

Kochi Metro Rail Project to be executed by DMRC: Minister

Kochi, July 7: Kerala Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Vijayakumar today said the state government had decided to hand over the execution of the Kochi Metro Rail Project to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

Speaking at a function here, he said a decision to this effect was taken after a recent meeting of Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan and DMRC Managing Director E Sreedharan.

Stressing that there was no uncertainity in the project, Mr Vijayakumar said the government was expecting to start the project work and complete it as early as possible.

Hey guys Does anyone have an idea whether Baypride Mall with its branded shops and international food court is the first of its kind in Kerala or are there any other malls in other cities. Also I would like to know whether there is anything like My Kingdom and Sridhar cafe in any other towns in Kerala.

Baypride mall is definitely the first of its kind in Kerala. As for places like My Kingdom and Sridhar Cafe, I'm not sure about Tvm, but Calicut definitely has nothing much that even compares to any of them. I think the next possible locations that you might find places like that coming up are Tvm and Trissur.

Does the govermental authorities in Kochi aware of the fact that
there is no balance whatsoever between the number of high-rise buildings
coming up and the required infrastructure like well laid roads for transportations
and garbage handling for years to come?

Do not take it as a pessimistic view because we all wish to see Kochi grow
with international standards. I will post some pictures here from Europe
so that it will give you all an idea how the roads and residential areas
and even shopping malls look like. I am sure Kochi has a tremendous
growth potential but it has to be orchestrated by the officials from
the very beginning

Great news... That's 16 million sqft of mall space under
construction and almost fully booked. This is a real feat compared to any
South Indian Metro. LuLu has started works on the project. Grand Mall, Summit, Mall O,
Aerens, Forum, Abad all the constructions seem to have started. It will be a treat
if people could get photos of these.

WOOOW.. 16 Million. thats something buddy!! the face of Cochin is changing FAST!! lets hope the administration does something about the plight of the roads and other infrastructure...

Tiger Airways, the Singapore-based low-cost carrier, is about to set up shop at the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) at the onset of this year’s winter schedule. This will take the number of foreign carriers operating out of Kochi to 13.

The airline would start with three services in a week between Kochi and Singapore, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, Shriram Bharath, Managing Director of CIAL, said. As per schedule, the flight would arrive here at 10.55 p.m. and would depart for Singapore at 11.45 p.m.

The airline would deploy Airbus-320 aircraft for operating the service, and 180 seats would be on offer.

Being a budget carrier, it would be an all-economy class service.

Ticket fares would start from Rs.1,600 depending on the time of reserving the ticket, Mr. Bharath said.

The airline received approval from the Government of India to operate services linking Singapore with Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Chennai, Goa and Kolkata, he said.

Initially the airline planned to launch services from Kochi during July-August and sought a slot at 8 p.m. “As it was midway through the summer schedule, that slot was already filled,” he said.

Regarding the preparedness of the airport in terms of infrastructure to host more airlines, he said that the new parallel taxi track would go a long way in boosting the airport’s potential to handle more services. “Besides, construction of four new parking bays would be undertaken immediately after monsoon, taking the total number of bays to 14.”

He expected the arrival of new airlines to propel the Kochi airport as a big player in the global aviation scene.

“With more aircraft taking to the Indian skies the Maintenance-Repair-Overhaul facility the airport proposes to set up would be much in demand,” he said.

At present, only Silk Air operates in the Kochi-Singapore sector.

Asked about the scope for another airline in the sector, Mr. Bharath said that being a budget carrier Tiger Airways would be able to attract its own passenger base.

Moreover, Singapore is a main point offering connections to various other destinations.

Besides, the passengers could benefit from the budget carrier’s own services to various destinations in the Asia Pacific region. Tiger Airways, which is a major player in the region, started off in 2004 with a fleet of two aircraft operating in three routes. The airline now operates to 18 destinations.

The carrier has placed an order for additional 50 new Airbus A320 aircraft.

16 million sq ft is really great. but we need to look at it in perspective.
bangalore has ongoing construction of about 122 million sft apart from the already existing mall area of about 32 million.
chennai has on going work/projects of about 76 million sft and hyderabad ha.
s about 72 million sft work in progress apart from their already existing malls.
but good for kochi..that its picking up...but the infrastructure is non existent..if this doesnt improve very soon, kochi will turn into a concrete slum by the sea...

well now 16 million doesnt look so good when compared with whats going on in other places... but something is always better than nothing... so lets all hope for the best... and the fact about the concrete slum is something thats very likely unless the necessary people do something about town planning.. they should even try to push the development else where like a New Cochin or something..
