Your City's Leading Department Store

Detroit's would have to be J.L. Hudson's:

Second would have to be Kern's:

Both have since been demolished.

What was your city's leading department store in the heyday of your downtown?

Portland's was Meier and Frank, which is now, like most of 'em, a Macys. However there is an uber luxury Starwood Luxury Collection Hotel being built in the gutted upper floors.

An interesting site "Remembering Great American Department Stores"
http://www.dshistory.com/

Atlanta's Grand Department Stores

Davison's...1860-1986; became Macy's, then this location closed in 2003.

Past the Roxy on the right...

http://www.atlantatimemachine.com/downtown/pch180b.htm

Built in 1925, it is now known as 180 Peachtree and still in use.

Rich's...1967-1975; purchased by Federated in 1975, the Rich's name disappeared in 2005.

The 1925 building is now part of the Sam Nunn Federal Center.

At first I thought about Macy's but Nordstroms was founded here so it has to be it:

Since Macy's is harboring a lot of resentment I thought I'd post a picture of the world's largest store.
