Hwy 101

Does anyone have the info on the twinning taking place on NS HWY 101 past Windsor?
Looking for the project diagrams and such.

A quick google search doesn't turn up anything beyond Exit 7.
(Ps: Seriously, use distance-based marker please.)

Twinned section of Highway 103 between Upper Tantallon and Ingramport now open (2 photos)

Highway 103 one of three 100-series highways with twinning projects underway

"Driving on a section of Highway 103 will look a lot different with the twinned section between Upper Tantallon and Ingramport officially open.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal announced the opening of the westbound (outbound) lanes on social media Wednesday afternoon.

They add the eastbound (inbound) lanes are being repaved to reflect the twinning changes with that work scheduled to be finished later this fall.

Woah that’s fast. 3 years of construction right?

I went for a little drive on Saturday down the new section of Highway 103. There is still plenty of construction going on but the new westbound lanes are open and the eastbound lanes are being redone.

This was my first time testing out my video camera so I apologize for the poor lighting and I'm to cheap to remove the watermark for now.

The Movie Maker sign blocked out the median cable in the video.

NSTIR has updated their website a bit. There is now a project page for Highway 103 - Bridgewater Interchange which will be future Exit 12A.

1.8 km... Just watch people trying to use that lane to pass slowpokes. The Ontarian in me says that this is a recipe for disaster...

This isn't the 401 - there's plenty of passing lanes on the 103 if people are impatient.

In all seriousness, the 103 should be 4 lanes all the way to Bridgewater. It shouldn’t be the hard to make it 4 lanes through to Chester. They should also probably add another interchange at Oak Island, but realistically, by 2025, they could have the whole 103 4 Lanes through to just past Bridgewater.

Currently the plan is to twin to Hubbards AFAIK. Traffic volumes halve once you get past that point.

As of 2015-2017, from the NS Dept of Transport:

Exit 3 (Timberlea) to Exit 4 (Sheldrake Lake): ~10,500 AADT
Exit 4 (Sheldrake) to Exit 5 (Tantallon): ~9,250 AADT
Ext 5 (Tantallon) to Exit 5A (Ingramport): ~12,000 AADT
Exit 5A (Ingramport) to Exit 6 (Hubbards):~11,000 AADT
Exit 6 (Hubbards) to Exit 7 (East River): ~4,300 AADT
Exit 7 (East River) to Exit 8 (Chester): ~3,400 AADT
Exit 8 (Chester) to Exit 9 (Chester Basin): ~4,900 AADT
Exit 9 (Chester Basin) to Exit 10 (Oakland Lake): ~4,300 AADT
Exit 10 (Oakland Lake) to Exit 11 (Blockhouse): ~4,300 AADT
Exit 11 (Blockhouse) to Exit 12 (Bridgewater): ~4,500 AADT
Exit 12 (Brdgewater) to Exit 13 (Bridgewater): ~8,750 AADT
Exit 13 (Bridgewater) to Exit 14 (Hebbville): ~5,400 AADT
Exit 14 (Hebbville) to Exit 15 (Italy Cross): ~5,700 AADT

Some of these are listed as combined and some of these are listed individually as eastbound and westbound (which is very annoying) but the important thing to note is that 10,000 AADT is the NS standard to require twinning. If you're able to anticipate trending in some areas (for the Bridgewater 12-13 twinning, for example) then you can twin prior to hitting the 10K threshold. The section between Hubbards and Blockhouse really hasn't seen any discernible increase in traffic between 2008 and 2015.

Also want to point out and appreciate Nova Scotia's Open Data portal for providing this AADT data. Looking at you, New Brunswick.

No wonder I had a hard time finding N.B. AADT data...

It doesn't exist publicly.

Previously i've had to make requests to NB's Department of Transportation for the data and when I asked for it I was bombarded with questions about why and for what reason. Complete nonsense.

I just had a peek at the data. Wouldn't Exit 6 to Exit 7 be 5'370 (EB) + 5'420 (WB)? So 10'790 AADT in 2018?

In any event the traffic does gradually get lower the further south you travel so twinning to Bridgewater could be hard to justify. IMO they should keep twinning until it meets the current twinned section at Chester Basin. Past there they should give it the Highway 101 style treatment to Exit 13.

The streetview above is for a section of Highway 101 that sees 10'100 AADT (2019) between Coldbrook and Berwick.

Woah 2 rumble strips. :O The distance between them is wide enough to fit in a metal cable barrier.

By the way, the twinned section of 103 is now showing up on Google Map.

Has anyone set their eyes on any of the specific details of the DOT Estimates for next summer. The causeway, highway 11 twinning, and the Centennial Bridge in the Miramichi were mentioned. Exactly what they are accomplishing next summer is a mystery based on my limited snooping of the DOT.Website.

I was gonna ask about N.B.-11 twinning too. I heard about rehabilitating that bridge but nothing on the twinning.
