2008 Favourites

A very simple question,

What are your three favourite proposals of 2008?

There are too many for a poll so instead as people mention a new proposal I will make a list at the bottom of this post and keep track manually.

It can be anything that was either proposed, approved, under construction or completed in 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

6 - International Place
5 - Trillium
5 - United Gulf (Texpark)
4 - Salter Street
4 - King's Wharf (+2)
2 - Harbour Isle
1 - McCully Worklofts
1 - Queen's Landing
1 - Water Street Power Plant

United Gulf, Salter block/Centennial development, International Place would be my picks. They're what's needed to inject some life into the downtown and give it a modern feel.

McCully Worklofts. From the renderings the building appears to fit in perfectly with the character of Agricola while also enhancing the beauty and making tha area more attractive to live and work on. Its an unique project and along with other new buildings it will greatly help the makeover of the North-End.

Trillium. A brand new condominium tower for South Park St. It'll help extend the retail district of SGR while at the same time also making South Park St a nicer street. It falls under the same height of nearby buildings so it won't feel out of place. And its a very beautiful building that is unrivalled in HRM.

Harbour Isle. A massive redevelopment of "wasteland" in Burnside. Its the first "urban resort" in Halifax. I love it mainly because it includes a brand new boardwalk, marina and four glass buildings. And it might also encourage the fixing up of waterfront property around the Bedford Basin.

And well I have to give Honourable Mentions to Gladstone Ridge and Salter St.

Not really. I do love the Worklofts a lot but just because of sheer size the Trillium is still my favourite.

I just didn't put my favourites in order. I just put them in the order of what i thought of first and well at the time i was researching the Worklofts.

1 - International Place
2 - United Gulf
3 - Salter Street

These 3 will make Halifax look like a modern city and alleviate the empty lot syndrome of downtown.

For me, my #3 was a toss up between International Place and Trillium. I definitely agree that International place will have a greater influence on Halifax, by helping to modernise the core,by bringing new jobs and adding to the skyline.Downtown, has a stagnant feel to it and this project is desperately needed. I chose Trillium however because aesthetically I prefer it, and i am a big fan of the SGR area. To me that is where the heartbeat of the city is, and any retail expansion in the area will add to the bustling atmosphere. There is also, of course, the benefit of having all those new resident's living in the area. And along with the Clyde St parking lots, plus the Cultural center/central library I very pleased with the direction this neighborhood is taking.....if they ever happen

Emera really needs to start up. It might not be the most important IMO but the ugliness of the power plant is almost enough to make me puke everytime i go downtown.

I really hope they'll start up in January.

You now have Kings Wharf listed twice in your first post, DJ.
Regarding the power plant.. why is it I always seem to like the buildings nobody else likes?

The Trillium. To me it's not a contest International Place would be tempting but it's too much in the maybe someday stage to make it in my opinion.

You do have two more votes if you want to add IP to your list

Actually now that I think about it, can we vote Kings Wharf? Has the development been approved? I'm thinking now the only thing council approved was logistical... not the actual development

I believe your correct, in that it still needs approval of the actual development.

Its in the "grey" area.

I did say you could vote for a proposal which technically this is but I also did say that it had to be from 2008 so it depends. No head way was made on this in 2008 except for the logistics.

Since the same applies for IP and UG (no headway made in 2008) though i will allow it under that rule.

The only question is if proposals should be allowed or not. What do you guys think? Yes or no for proposals?
