A few from here via FB.

And an interesting moment in history, Canadian banks came to Newfoundland's rescue when our major ones collapsed in 1894. The very next year, all sorts of advertising elevated Canadian locations over all others, such as this price sheet for the Anglo-American Telegraph Company (our main one at that time), even though the connections west were by far the least established and most expensive:

If I didn't see that church at the top, I would have guess Montreal for these shots. Great pics!

^ HBC announced it was closing at the end of February. It has some heritage protections, but at this point, no one knows what could happen. Cushman & Wakefiled appraised the real estate value at $0 based on tax liability and redevelopment costs essentially eating up the potential purchase price.

Hmmm - didn’t think they had webcams to track construction progress back when this was built.

Sad to hear it’s closing and it’s future is uncertain.

Colourized image of Ottawa, ca. 1871-1874.

Picture taken from the old Court House, still standing today as Arts Court. I can recognize four buildings that remain to this day; the East Block, the West Block, the u/c Library of Parliament (completed in 1876) and 541 Sussex. Centre Block burnt down in 1916 and re-built by 1920 (office block, Commons, Senate) and 1927 (Peace Tower).

Arts Court in 2003, where the picture was taken from, behind the Rideau Centre on Nicholas Street. An expansion along with a residential/hotel tower has been built at the back since then.

Fascinating to me how the atmosphere in that second example seems, from just a picture, to have remained intact despite the huge changes.

Via FB, via the Archives of St. Pierre et Miquelon. Water Street sometime; someone who knows cars can probably say. There's a centennial plate.

Are we using traffic cones as Christmas bells? Also, Nona in the red building near the centre is still there, still same location.

While the third example, where everything remains intact, the atmosphere has changed considerably. Cheap vinyl siding vs wooden shingles make a big difference.

It's backwards and can't be 1973 as the First Canadian Place was not completed until 1975, and RBC was not completed until 1977??
