Would have been cool if they had somehow had part of the canopy for the bus terminal come out from the new building carrying over the V shaped support theme.

The bus terminal and the tower were not really coordinated. Still, the little comfort station/shed for bus drivers at the SE corner will be torn down to open better sight lines into BMO's plaza and create a landscaped area.

BMO in turn will build a new comfort station for the bus drivers a little further west next to the "pass thru", connected to some retail space. Hopefully the retail space includes a 7-11 or some kind of convenience store, that will be a nice amenity for bus riders waiting for a connection.

From this morning:

It's a shame the diamond structural expression doesn't go all the way up; it would have made a far more interesting design.

What are the round-headed fasterners on the gusset plates?

On the photos above there look to be regular bolts but also some fasteners with rounded heads. They can't be rivets...anybody know what they are? Are they just pins to hold the rest of the gusset in place while they tighten the bolts?

^They are tension control bolts. That is the most common way to connect steel in modern steel design.

If you are referring to this

I believe what we are seeing is some form the head side, and some from the tail side.

^^ I see what you're saying. They definitely look like rivets. I thought they might be bolts with a square neck, to fit in square holes, but that can't be, judging by the holes to the right. Hmm.

Too early to tell, but I'm wont to agree. Though this isn't a HUGE tower by Chicago's standards, its location will make it really stick out.

I agree, Chicago and New York do skyscrapers well, BMO is just another example of this.

Its a form of a TC (Tension Control) Bolt. They were used at 150 N.

^^By the way, great pics as always, Nick!

^ Looking at those pics further up, I’m sure there are some really awesome load transfers going on here that involve cool as hell engineering and math.

Nothing that I’ll fully understand, but my 9 year old son says he wants to building skyscrapers so I’m showing him these pics

The field you are looking for is Statics, often taught as Static and Dynamics. I was thrilled when my 18yr old son wanted to borrow my old college text.

An early lesson is always triangles rock - easy to demonstrate and grasp.
