Assuming that it is made with vinegared sushi rice, the Dynamite Roll meets the definition of sushi. You could argue otherwise, but you would also be wrong.

It's Sushi-Yama, I think they are Japanese, but I am not sure. Basic bentos start around $11. It's been around for awhile, the chefs appear to be skilled, and it's fairly popular.

Yeah that place is Korean run, just read the google reviews (search 'Korean'). Also, they have items like Spicy Chirashi Don with Korean Spicy Sauce on the menu which is a dead giveaway.

Again not saying that means the place is bad, just don't expect a haute cuisine experience and a reverence to ingredients that you would find in Japan. It's sushi for the (Canadian) masses.

I used to be kind of a snob regarding 'authentic-ness', but I've long since concluded that as long as it is tasty, I actually don't much care.

Agreed, some of the world's best cuisines are mashups and local takes on other cuisines - Malaysian, Mexican, Peruvian, etc.

I was just merely stating that you can't really compare an Omakase restaurnt in Vancouver that has fish flown in from Tsukiji Market to a Sushi joint owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Kim out in Chatham, ON. Vancouver also has a huge proportion of the latter, but the mere presence of the former drives up quality.

Definitely. It's one of the pleasures of going to a city - the calibre of food available is just that much better.

Who said the two were the same? I think someone paying $20 for lunch knows they aren't getting haute cuisine.

No, I was saying that you can't compare a $20 Bento Box from a joint in small-town Ontario with what you can get with $20 at a run of the mill Vancouver sushi joint. You can't get haute cuisine for that price either but it's still miles ahead in quality.

Sunshine Chinese on Corydon is a great little hole in the wall Chinese restaurant here in Winnipeg. Amazingly fresh seafood.

Also George's Burgers on Ness near 17 Wing air force base is one of my favorites. I recommend the double bacon burger with chili on it.

If you live close to Burlington and you're bored and you want to play a game for a half hour, just drive to this donut place and sit in the parking lot for 20 minutes and count all the people that take selfies in front of the giant donut. I've been three times and it never fails.

It is very cool and it makes you wonder why we don't see more big ass novelty signs. Well, if there were a lot more, then our streetscapes would become very tacky, but I would have thought more businessness would have tried this out. No idea how many thousands of dollars it costs though.

This ain't Randy's Donuts in LA famous, but it definitely draws in people just for that sign. And it's pretty cool inside. Definitely a hit for younger people.

Also, I guess it's based on the Simpson's donut.

What other giant novelty restaurant signs are out there? Or novelty food?

Lamanna Bakery in Scarboro. Not sure if those dessert pizzas were a one off thing or you can actually custom order them.

Agreed.

There's a really great donut shop in Campbellford called Dooher's Bakery. I think they, or others, claim to be the best donuts in Canada as one usually does, but they are pretty good. Haven't been to Randy's but might swing by to see what the deal is. As someone in the East End I usually end up at the Gerrard East Glory Hole Donuts, but there's a ton of places that sell any kind of donut that someone might like.

We regularly drive through Campbellford on the way to the cottage, but haven't yet been to Dooher's. Others have recommended its donuts, but a 4-hour drive doesn't invite many leisurely stops. However, next year I'm going to drop in and grab a dozen.

Those craving doughnuts in Hamilton often sing praises for Grandad's on James St. North... I'm not a big consumer of such things, but they are damn good.

Donut Monster is another local favourite, and not far from where I live.

There are also a bunch of other bakeries and doughnut makers that make the "best local" lists. Tim Hortons is not among them. lol

It's definitely up there on the inconvenience rating so I only end up making the drive if i'm in Belleville or thereabouts.

I asked about giant novelty signs for restaurants and forgot about the The Big Apple off the 401 in Colborne. Was there a few weeks ago too. I didn't realize there was mini golf there too. I know they have a petting zoo.

By the way, are there any big KFC bucket signs around anymore?

And for novelty food, there's the foot long hotdog joint in Burlington across from the Royal Botanical Gardens I suppose.
