Haha, I had the same thought. At least they'll get a bit of a return on the land sale.

Yep, a friend of mine is part of the management company building it. It's on Mopac and Scofield Ridge Parkway-ish.

There's another one just about to open out by the airport.

They are literally moving the Fairfield Inn tower crane a few feet this weekend so it can construct the Cambria.

Here's another view of the crane move to the project next door.

I'm not sure how many rooms are in each of these, but on a busy weekend, I'm guessing there will be 1000+ people staying in all three of them combined. Mediocre or not, that's a lot of feet on the ground walking about on Rainey St and in/around downtown.

It's just fine. Not everyone can, or will shell out $400 a night for a hotel room. I am personally very happy to have a diverse offering of hotel accommodations in our downtown. More foot traffic, more customers for our local businesses, more tax base. WIN, WIN, WIN.

It's actually a complaint I hear often from people out of town ...the lack of cheap hotel rooms around downtown. I wouldn't mind a 1,000 room La Quinta Grande built somewhere around the convention center and 6th Street.

design counts. Filler for filler just dilutes the quality of the city.
It's not a game.
It's a neighborhood.

Yeah this is pretty much my beef. It's not a brand issue, or a price point issue. I know we need more affordable inventory in the DT market. It's a design issue. These guys are pretty much using the downtown version of the 30-day prefab build they use everywhere, on every exit off the turnpike. It's just bad land use in one of the hottest corners of the hottest cities in the country.

Not only would these guys make more return on their investment if they went higher and blended the usage, but they'd be better stewards of the city. Of course, I also get that pivoting to something new comes with its own costs in time and money, but especially with the Cambria, it could just be a much better beast.

Not Bad. Looks like a nice suburban hotel. It does not offend; better than before; less than possible. I can live with it.
