^ excellent. Could've had some modern, leased-out buildings in time for PanAm. Those buildings are coming down.

Farr saved the Tivoli, now he's the destroyer of James North.

Do you actually believe that if he were able to demolish the buildings 2 years ago, that he would have built something by now? He's a land speculator. You can see buildings that are owned/managed by his firm all over downtown, including vacant land and parking lots. If he'd been able to demolish them, there would just be a giant empty hole beside Gore Park instead of a row of abandoned buildings.

An article about that proposal (21 Main Street West) appeared on The Public Record yesterday. It looks good (to me). The considerations about widening of Main and loss of surface parking are maddening, but I gather they won't really be impediments. Phase I looks like it could be real, and would be good.

Edit: Just noticed this was already brought up in the MacNab Square thread (more appropriately).

is this progress, or just overdue compliance in securing the site?

Seems like a "Hey! These buildings aren't falling down! Don't worry; scaffolding!"

Sad that we are stuck with a key address in the heart of our city being held with no real prospects of redevelopment, regardless of format or heritage. Where is the vision.

^Does a parking garage fronted by a row of facades count as vision?

I still want to see his proposal, more executed in planning. Perhaps a model.. I'm a total nerd when it comes to architectural models. I hope he builds tall. Even with the current 4-5 story buildings they block most of the sun being on the south side. Patios actually suck on that side of King... always in shade. Might as well build 30-40 story towers on that block.

Knock them down already. I'm so over this debate. Build something new that utilizes the lots behind them.

If I believed he was likely to actually build I'd be on your side, but he doesn't seem to have a very good track record.
