New Crane Downtown

There's a large crane downtown up from the Capitol towards Crampton Bowl. Does anyone know what that is for? It's the type of crane generally seen for a multi-story building.

The state is constructing a new parking deck. It's probably going to replace the surface parking area that's directly behind the Capitol building. That area is being eyed for building a new Statehouse for the legislature.

RSA is beginning construction on the RSA Annex, a 7 story building with a 5 story parking deck. The building is going up behind the Criminal Justice Building (old St. Margaret’s.) Construction has begun.

Thanks. I was curious as to what RSA was building at that spot...

I heard today that the Equal Justice Initiative is building another hotel near the Legacy Museum downtown. Has anyone else heard that? The new plaza, parking, and bus unloading area for the museum is looking really nice.

Ravello Ristorante is a great new asset to downtown. It is great to have another top rated chef in the area. The architecture, food, and wine quality are New York City quality and will be unexpected and amazing to visitors. The Vintage Hospitality Group continues to raise the level of dining experiences for Montgomery.

Hey montman, here's a little background on that property:

The property that's being cleared across from the museum (formerly a Biscuit Baseball parking lot) was bought from the city before the pandemic by the hotel group that owns the other two hotels on Coosa Street. They bought it on the promise that they would build a new hotel there if the city would promise to make streetscape improvements on the surrounding blocks. The former mayor Todd Strange signed the agreement almost 3 years ago. But then a new mayor came, then the pandemic came... and the site had laid dormant ever since. Now there is dirt moving on the site, but so far I haven't heard anything officially on who's building or what's being built. But if true, it is interesting to hear that EJI may be spear-heading their own hotel project.

Learned yesterday that Ascent Hospitality is building two hotels with a 350 car parking deck behind the Legacy Museum. Ground is already being turned. Also, EJI is going to turn the old Hilltop Arms building into a hotel and conference center especially for their national leadership conferences they are launching. MGM downtown is booming.

Here is more information on the new Ascent Hospitality hotels now under construction in downtown behind the Legacy Museum. A six story, 140 room Residence Inn will face North Perry Street. There is a rendering on the Ascent Hospitality website. A 6 story, 133 room Home 2 Suites will face Columbus Street. Behind the hotels will be a 3 story parking deck with access on Lawrence and Randolph. This info is from the city council planning pages. This will bring a total of 9 hotels to the downtown area when the new autograph Marriott is finished.

Wow... That property has changed hands many times over the years with no actual action on any promised plan for development. The last time was a company called Sys-Con LLC who announced plans to convert the building into a luxury hotel, that they would operate, back in 2017.

Maybe they have partnered with EJI to construct the hotel for them. But at any rate, I'm more confident that it may really happen this time... IF, EJI is actually involved in it.

The city council is considering approving a busker license ordinance for street entertainers in the downtown and Cloverdale entertainment districts. The entertainers would be allowed until 10:00 PM week days, until midnight on weekends. Interesting!

Does anyone know when Amazon plans to break ground on their new facility? Also, is there any news on when the inland intermodal center will start construction? Hoping a downturn in the economy will not impact these projects. Glad to see FedEx starting their new facility.

Heard yesterday that the inland intermodal facility will require a new cargo center at the airport. Air cargo will increase flights using the runways and will require building new facilities across from the passenger terminal. An airport hotel is in the very early planning stages. Does anyone have an update on the F35 project?

The whitewater park is well underway. A recent drone flyover showed the significant progress. It is on YouTube, whitewater park Montgomery.

The old Hilltop Arms apartments are finally under construction. Workers are everywhere transforming the building into a hotel and conference center for EJI. It will be the 10th major hotel in downtown. Glad to see that transformation underway. The new EJI plaza is nearly finished with parking and bus drop off for tourist to the museum.

The Murphy mansion is looking great as renovation continues. It will be the entrance to the new Marriott Autograph hotel. The penthouse restaurant is now really visible on top of the converted warehouse that is part of this project. Exciting to see.

Heard a rumor yesterday that a major update is in the works for Capitol Towers. With downtown condos and apartments filled with waiting lists, it makes sense that someone is considering upgrades to this large apartment building.
