We covered the Echo Park Pioneer Chicken, and the nearby Pioneer Super Market, about a year ago in post #30174, post #30178 and post #30180. Pioneer Take Out was at 1321 Echo Park Avenue, while Pioneer Pizza was at 1323, and Pioneer Liquors was at 1325 (according to the 1968 CD).

That's the back of the Ainsworth house at about Cimarron Street-- built ca. 1910. I'll look for a front view. The owner was a railroad man. Demo'ed in 1965.

Harry B Ainsworth appears at 2190 W Adams Street (now Boulevard) in the 1911 CD.

Here's a 1910 Pierce Arrow, similar to the one mentioned and visible on the postcard.

This Julius Shulman photoset has a rather generic title. It's "Job 312: Building report, 1948".



The set has a total of eight images showing different angles at the same location. I've picked out three.



This looks like a communal incinerator.

The first image above shows the back of the Madison Hospital, with a sign directing people to an entrance on Madison Avenue. The 1942 CD shows the Madison Hospital at 1151 N Madison Avenue, which is to the left of the "Madi" part of my street label on the 1948 view below. That means that all the Shulman photos were taken at the dead end of Vermont Place.

Fond memories. This Coffee Dan's was a favorite hangout for Hollywood High Students after school. Four or five kids in a booth, each ordering a Coke and sharing an order of French Fries. Lee Drugs across the street had a fountain and individual jukeboxes with top 40 records. Most drug stores on Hollywood Boulevard had soda fountains, including stores at Cherokee, Hudson, Ivar and vine. Saw many good movies at the Hollywood Theatre, including The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? and The Music Man. All for $1.25 a ticket. Walking down the Boulevard towards The Drake, we shopped for typewriter ribbons and notebook paper at Miller's Stationery.

Thanks for those memories BDiH! When I found a snapshot of this place on Flickr last February, at this post HERE, the person (Vicky Valentine) whose photo it was said:

"Coffee Dan's, my hangout before high school. 1966-68."
She indicated she and her friend's referred to it as "C.D.'s."

Since you used to frequent the place, do you remember if the waitresses had any particular "Coffee Dan's" uniforms they wore? Was there any particular color scheme for these restaurants?

Lee Drugs, that you mentioned, is now a souvenir store called Memories of Hollywood. The Coffee Dan's location is now a McDonald's.

Both the liquor store and the "burger" stand on the side opposite Pioneer Chicken are still there. The liquor store looks almost exactly the same but the burger place now sells tacos and enchiladas and the "burger" signs in the truncated diamond shapes have been changed to say "tacos, Enchiladas and Burritos" The more elaborate signage on the roof is gone, replaced by a squarish orange sign that says "Los Burritos" "homemade Mexican food" The larger building south of the burrito place is still there but now covered with very colorful murals on the street sides. That building now houses an urgent care and dentists, but was apparently a medical building even before that.

The B of A on the opposite side of Sunset is also virtually unchanged, at least on the outside and it is still a B of A. Opposite the bank building on the other side of Echo Park, is a building with a rounded corner that you can just see peeking out from behind the Pioneer Chicken sign. That building is also still there with apartments above and retail below.

I think there's a typo in the job name of today's Julius Shulman post. Looking at the first picture it should be "C. Russell Wilkerson School". This is "Job 846: E. Russell Wilkerson School (El Monte, Calif.), 1950".



I was expecting some interior photos, but the other five pictures in the set all show the wash basins, some being used by children. I'm only posting one as an example.

A quick search for the "Russell Wilkerson School" yielded mainly references to the Shulman pictures, so I changed my criteria to "Wilkerson School", and found the Wilkerson Elementary School at 2700 Doreen Ave, El Monte. The view from the front looks relatively unchanged.

I have to say, I prefer the back of the Ainsworth house. The front looks a bit too much like Mount Vernon.

So did the Ainsworth family have a young son around the time of the sepia pc?
(I'm still wondering about that kid in the yard )

Just like 1317 South Hope, we have another survivor, although its neighbors to the right have all gone. The building to the left (1225 South Hope) looks reasonably old too, but isn't there in the 1933 picture above.

While looking for something else, I came across the posts above from February 2014, and wondered what had happened to 1221 S Hope Street. The newest GSV image is a year old, so things may have changed again by now. I have to say, considering what was there before, and the building next door, I find this rather ugly.

The only consolation is that the old building appears to have been preserved under the sheets of wood. This is how it looked in December 2014.

The 2014 building permit I found mentions the roof being removed and the ceiling being raised to 29 feet high. It doesn't say what the altered building will be used for.

I am not sure what symbol is on the banner below (but you can clearly see two Ws on either side of the hatchet & mallet)

Woodmen of the World. Like a lot of fraternal organizations, provided burial and life insurance. Amazingly, still around, in the form of Woodmen Life.
