You would be surprised about how much of our evolutionary history has primed us for that kind of stupidity. Thinking is relatively new for humans. Tearing limbs off of anyone and anything that makes us uncomfortable goes WAY farther back.

DogHaus open in DTPHX

I’m excited about this place but I’m not sure it’s the best time to open...

While one restaurant opens, another place shuts down. The Churchill announced today it's shutting down until it is safe to do so. Good for them!

The Churchill's 100% outdoor seating makes it seem like just about the safest place around. I wonder if there's something else going on.

I don't think so. The owners sound pretty outspoken about taking COVID seriously.

Stardust Pinbar just made a similar announcement. To pre-empt cynics like me, they went out of their way to say their re-closure has nothing to do with anything happening with their own staff. Thankfully, the front end of Stardust, Ziggy's pizza shop, is staying open:

Question: who do you think made the best adjustment to the takeout era (who already wasn't basically that already)?

My vote is for Matt's Big Breakfast.

It always seemed like Pizzeria Bianco would over take-out pizzas when Hell froze over. Hell froze over in March 2020.

Wait until these apartments in the area start filling up. You're gonna see a huge "flight to quality" fast when the recession hits and the virus clears.

I'm not sure what this means. Are you saying the Churchill will thrive post-pandemic due to new residents nearby, or that it may continue to struggle due to the recession?

Sounds like the first. I would agree with that sentiment.

Agreed on Bianco. I would love to see him make some sort of slice franchise as well someday.

I believe he is sort of mentoring, sponsoring, or in some way supporting the Via Della slice shop which is in a perpetual state of construction on 5th Ave just south of Van Buren.

I’m not actually sure there’s going to be an extended recession. Banks are flush with cash and I’m just not seeing the signs of the credit crunch that was a nagging feature of the great recession.

What I am seeing is an absolute glut of new apartments that wreck class B properties as the A properties have to race to the bottom to fill rents. Although a lot of recent apartment construction has been financed or rather subsidized by opportunity zone tax credits so who knows.

I had friends rented in the skyline lofts when they first opened and they could hardly give away units in the beginning. They steeply raised rents after a year.

Yeah I really see this as a V shape because at large the demand structure in the larger economy hasn't changed its a shock to the system do to outside forces (The government) not a collapse of demand or deflationary spiral. Its more of a supply disruption like you'd have during a war.

Now it will probbaly take well into next year to fully "recover" or even several years and you are going to have delayed reactions as the damage from retail and restaurant closings echo on through other parts of the economy but this is all only because of the Virus. As soon as the threat is perceived contained, not even over just contained and acceptable, people will be right back to normal behavior in short order.

And TBH its a good thing if apartment prices go down for a while, they are quite frankly overpriced downtown.
