Any more "Corners" out there?

Peter's Corners in Flamborough, where Hwy 5 meets 8 and 52.

Duff's in Ancaster, where Garner (former Hwy 53) meets Shaver Rd. and Wilson St. (former Hwy 2). 5 km eastward Google Maps has "Garner's Corners" at Garner and Southcote Roads, but I don't recall that one being a thing in the past.

I think there used to be more around the Hamilton area too (like where Hwy 20 met 53 and 56, which is Elfrida but I thought it was a "corners" too at one time). They're either not on the map or no longer signed.

I seem to recall some in the rural parts of Niagara and Haldimand and Norfolk. Can't think of their names offhand though.

Empire Corners along Hwy 56 in Haldimand, and Nelles on Hwy 3 west of Cayuga.

Rural Ontario is probably peppered with them.

In Alberta:

Beach Corner, just west of Carvel Corner, a T-intersection between Range Road Fifteen And Highway 16A

Carvel Corner, just off of Secondary Highway 770, south of Manly Corner. Not really a crossroad, but a settlement to the east of the highway.

Manly Corner: roughly a crossroad, with two highways (Alaska Highway and Secondary Highway 770) shooting away perpendicularly off of the Yellowhead.

Dang, of course, that's just down the road from me. And Nelles Corners is halfway between Cayuga and Hagersville, two towns against whom I played hockey, soccer and baseball while representing Caledonia.

I see Alberta has a couple places celebrating corners, but the more I investigate, the more it looks like Ontario has dozens of them.

Orwell Corner and Poole’s Corner PEI, and Sussex Corner NB (off the top of my head). I’m sure there are others.

Also Sunny Corner, NB. Which is indeed a corner, but not a crossroad.

There’s a Paquette Corners, a tiny hamlet just south of Windsor.

Blue Corners or Blue Corner, a hamlet just west of Hawkesbury, ON.

Ascot Corner, QC, a small town east of Sherbrooke.

Wilson's Corner, a tiny hamlet north of me in the Gatineau Hills.

I wonder what the biggest place with "Corner(s)" in its name would be.

I guess Corner Brook NL, then Ascot Corner QC and Sussex Corner NB for incorporated places.

We also have a few hamlets named « Le Coin-... » in Québec, especially in the Brome-Missisquoi region, such as Le Coin-Chez-Brault, Le Coin-Chez-Desranleau, Le Coin-Guérin...

Crewsons Corners. Not quite as famous as the Four Corners of the US and Canada. If you take Hwy. 7 west towards Guelph then you’ve just about passed through the spot where the four municipalities meet. It would be quirky if someone marked it with a small monument. It would bring in upwards of two tourists annually to the area.

Guelph/Eramosa is different from Guelph?!
I used to drive on 7 instead of the 401 between GTA and K-W from time to time, and I never gave it much thought.

Guelph/Eramosa is an amalgamated township from the Township of Guelph and the Township of Eramosa and small portions of Nichol and Pilkington.

The City of Guelph is a separated municipality from the County of Wellington. All local services are provided from by the city, though it is still apart of Wellington for census purposes.

Yeah, I always find that Guelph/Eramosa thing funny. Partly due to there already being a Guelph but also the official use of the slash instead of hyphen. So many amalgamations leading to funny or dumb names. But, the vast majority of people wouldn't say they live in Guleph/Eramosa, but would say the village or population centre they live in. In this case, they would say Rockwood, which has one of the most beautiful conservation areas by the way. Most residents probably don't even know the official name of the municaplity they live in.

Bruce county cracks me up. They basically have two municipalities called South Bruce.

Bruce County comprises eight municipalities (in population order):

Municipality 2016 Population[46] Population Centres[47]
Town of Saugeen Shores 13,715 Port Elgin, Southampton
Municipality of Kincardine 11,389 Kincardine
Municipality of Brockton 9,461 Walkerton
Town of South Bruce Peninsula 8,416 Wiarton
Township of Huron-Kinloss 7,069 Lucknow
Municipality of Arran-Elderslie 6,803 Chesley, Paisley
Municipality of South Bruce 5,639 Mildmay
Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula 3,999 Lion's Head, Tobermory

Huron County has lots of directional names.

Huron County comprises nine lower-tier municipalities (in order of population):

Municipality of South Huron (population centre: Exeter)
Municipality of Huron East (population centres: Seaforth, Brussels)
Town of Goderich
Municipality of Central Huron (population centre: Clinton)
Municipality of Bluewater (population centre: Bayfield)
Township of Ashfield–Colborne–Wawanosh
Township of North Huron (population centre: Wingham, Blyth)
Municipality of Howick
Municipality of Morris-Turnberry

When some bureaucrat was trying to come up with names for these made up municapalities, I wonder if they just said eff it, call it some generic directional name. Naming an entire area based just on the name of the largest village or town would upset the others. Conjoining all the village names with a bunch of hyphens can get ridiculous. Coming up with a portmanteau that sounds cool would be preferable. Or come up with a neutral name that may or may not have anything to do with the area but sounds nice. Cambridge is an example (Hespeler, Galt, Preston). But that's not exactly original.

Brings to mind the "tri-state" and "tri-county" areas oft-mentioned in U.S. films and shows. Quad-muni is a step up, though perhaps less verbally appealing.

And I wonder if Samuel Ryckman was the same surveyor whose name was coined for 6 & 53 (now Upper James and Rymal) in south Hamilton.

Great name. Lots of car accidents there?

Given the current direction of this thread, it would appear we need a Great Canadian Toponymy Thread.

Great idea, I also find that Google is pretty terrible at nomenclature accuracy in general, especially of physical features.

From what I have heard, the name goes back to stagecoach days and the accidents that those guys had. Even then, London drivers sucked. Now the name is more appropriate for the retail blight that has taken over. The entire city should just adopt this name.
