I've heard some of Moscow's stations are almost like palaces.

All three appear to have the Old Soviet style. I think the third is actually in Moscow and the second Almaty, Kazakhstan.

I've always found that transit stations easily look much nicer in photographs in person, but those are beautiful anyways. One of my personal faves not pictured is the Drassanes metro station in Barcelona, which looks as if it was designed for a Star Wars set. Obviously not to everyone's taste, however.

Many of the old soviet states have amazing stations - Kiev, Khuzik, Tahkent, all incredible. Germany and Sweden are no slouches either! While NY certainly has its nice stations I cant help but feel cheated looking at some of these, especially putting them side by side with your average NYC subway stop.

The only metro in the US that has a chance of competing with these other metros and their stations is DC.

Completely agree; DC's stations are subtly magnificent.

Not true. Both L.A. and N.Y. have some really nice stations.

That's the old NY city hall station.

Hollywood and Vine in L.A. The ceiling is covered in old film reels.

They do, but the vast majority of stations in NY are not of this quality. LA does have nice, wide-open stations generally.

London has numerous showpiece stations from various eras... Art Deco, Modernism, and of course the entire Jubilee Line Extension. The average London tube station is pretty nice, though, with those vaulted ceilings and tile walls.

I don't mind the New York stations, though. They don't need to be palaces, especially when the city needs over 600 of them. The MTA needs to do a better job keeping them clean and dry, but that's a different problem.

Our stations in LA blow. Hollywood/Vine is quaint but is nothing near the level of what's been posted above.

Unfortunately no. The subway cars that are in use today in NY are too long to make that turn. I believe you can tour that station though.

That makes it that little bit more awesome imo. Imagine how mysterious it is.

That's City Hall station on the 4/5/6. 6 trains use the loop track after terminating one stop up the line to head back uptown. Tours do happen and once upon a time riders could remain on the train as it went through the loop but I think security measures after 9/11 shut that down.

Modern IRT trains can and do make the turn regularly (see volguus zildrohar's post). But yes, they are indeed too long - too long to use the station as a stop because the gap between the train doors and the platform is too large for passengers to board, disembark the train safely. You also have modern terrorism concerns given the stops proximity to City Hall.
