Even touristy areas like Hollywood or Fisherman's Wharf in SF have issues, though they are not dangerous, just annoying. I had to tell my daughter not to take anything from street buskers. They will try to hand children balloon animals, stickers or other little trinkets and then hope the parents will give them a tip.

for whatever reason, i've had way more memorable incidents with street-aggression on the west coast of NA than the east coast, and i travel to the east coast way more often. new orleans is in its own category, though maybe not by much. perhaps i only remember less...miami too, sometimes. you might get street aggression from a sane or otherwise minding-their-own-business person on the east coast more often but that ain't what i mean.

the midwest is pretty tame in that category, even chicago.

Definitely gritty. Reminds me a lot of the west end in Duluth, Minnesota.
