Yep, after they've constructed a thick matrix of interconnected steel rebar, over which they'll pour the concrete. Here are some photos from the 1213 Walnut thread (from thisisforreal, Building Philly, and ConstructStudent), showing the construction of the mat foundation there:

The thin layer is called a "mud slab"...poured to create a working surface for the rod-setters...it has no structural value...

I wonder if the cost overruns from the digging had anything to do with this.... http://www.phillymag.com/citified/20...brook-lenfest/

Hmm...I would assume this is something he's raised with the hotel brands and they've agreed to it. At least I hope so and that it's not a point of contention that could compromise the build or their commitment to be tenants.

In other news, not trying to start a city vs city conversation, but Vancouver is gorgeous. In aggregate, the skyline is great, and some of their buildings are special, but many look right at home here in Philly, especially when viewed up close. That surprised me some, given how much Asian money is being injected into the Vancouver real estate.

I guess what I'm trying to say is we are quite the negadelphians. Our aggregate is also awesome, we've got some gems in the mix, and they won't all be works of art.

And if anyone knows what this one is, let me know so I can go post it in the appropriate construction thread in the Vancouver part of the forums.

Welcome back thisisforreal! Sounds like you had a good time, and were able get some good photo opportunities! I have no idea what that building is though.

Wow, those pics REALLY give you a sense of how deep this project is. Thisisforreal's pics are awesome, but its harder to tell the depth.

I believe they are where the core is built, and I'd bet that this building has 2 cores, one for each hotel. Since the core weights more then the rest of the building it probably needs a thicker foundation. I believe you can see how this plays out in the photos for 1213 Walnut St.

All the delays and overruns may have left Lenfest's wallet a large depressed area.
