Wilson Street redesign wins provincial award
(Ancaster News, Mike Pearson, Dec 21,2 012)
Last summer’s heritage themed Wilson Street East redesign has won a Project of the Year Award in Transportation from the Ontario Public Works Association.
The road project, completed between February and July, included heritage street lighting, a stone gateway feature, landscaped medians, a pedestrian crossing and water fountain at the southern entrance to the Ancaster Heritage Village Business Improvement Area.
Other enhancements include bicycle lanes in both directions, a new traffic signal at Jerseyville Road, and an entrance to the rail trail near Dalley Drive.
Overhead utility wires were also replaced with underground services to enhance the heritage look.
The OPWA award will be officially presented to the City of Hamilton on Jan. 23 at the OPWA annual conference and awards luncheon at the Mississauga Banquet and Convention Centre.
The Wilson Street project won in the $2 million to $10 million category. Last year’s project included full water and waste water upgrades, plus repaving from Halson Street to Fiddler’s Green Road.
Gary Moore, director of engineering services in the city’s public works department, credited Dillon Consulting and contractor New-Alliance Limited for working effectively with city staff. Ancaster’s Ciccarelli Group completed landscape contracting.
“You can’t do this without having a good team in place,” said Moore.
Ancaster councillor Lloyd Ferguson was also impressed with the teamwork shown by the city’s construction partners.
“I would say the project met my expectations but what exceeded my expectations is the cooperation I got from the engineers, architects, contractor and the impacted business, which allowed the project to be under budget, ahead of schedule and what I believe exceeded the community’s expectations,” he states in an email.
Moore estimated the project came in more than $200,000 below budget.
The city is planning to repave Wilson Street from Halson to Rousseaux Street this summer. The 2013 work includes only removal and replacement of asphalt, plus limited curb and sidewalk upgrades.
