Life´s not easy in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro

Photos taken by forumers Vinicius and Wallyplift at the brazilian forums in Skyscrapercity.

Photos can be found at :www.skyscrapercity.com, in the brazilian section.

Rio de Janeiro

I´ll show you 3 suburbs of Rio de Janeiro: São Conrado, Joatinga and Barra da Tijuca.

Sao Conrado and Joatinga

Fancy homes over the hills facing the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by tropical forest and granite rocks.

Notice the large swimming pool in the left of the pic.

Now, heading to nearby Barra da Tijuca.

Barra da Tijuca is the largest suburb in Rio de Janeiro.
It´s far from downtown and from the notorious Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. It has some areas where one can find many condos while other areas are reserved for detached houses only.

were these pics taken by Wallyplift and Vinicius or did they just FOUND those pictures?

Because those first images were taken from helicopter and apparently show the location of some terrain!

Can you give me the link of the thread, because those are wonderful images, and I want to see if there are more of these gorgeous images on the original thread!

You and almost everyone who visits those places.

Some say that for those with money, Rio is one of the best places to live.

It´s amazing that nobody here ever posts any "real" photos of Rio only post card quality type pictures. I have been a resident of Barra da Tijuca for the last 13 years and I can pretty much tell you that this place hasn´t looked this good for at least 8 of those years.

The freeways are full of potholes even though we pay good money to keep them in shape, but like all taxes that you pay in Brasil they end up in some politicians pocket.

Every red light you stop there´s people asking you for money, selling useless stuff or handing out real estate pamphlets, it´s very annoying. People here drive like lunatics, as fast as they want and with no regard or respect for traffic laws. Although cariocas are regarded as being one of the most friendly people in the world they are also the most uneducated. Crime here altough not as present as other parts of the city is still something to be aware of, being robbed at gunpoint while stopping your car on a red light is rare but still happens.

Mind you I take absolutely no joy in depicting Rio in such a harsh manner. When I was a teenager living here in the 90´s this place was an absolute paradise and I wanted to live here forever, my best friends still live here but as you age you start opening your eyes to problems that where not a concern when you were young. So now It has gotten to the point that I´m leaving the country in pursuit of peaceful living elsewhere.

A wise frind of mine once said "Living in Rio is like having a prostitute as a girlfriend, she will give you the time of your life but at the cost of screwing you for everything you´ve got".

Exclamation Actually unreal!

I agree with "Dude from Rio". I'm also from Rio. I think the guy who has posted these photos is a hotel owner, a big entertainment businessman or even the mayor of the city. Yeah, Rio is really a wonderful city when you live in a big posh mansion and you don't have to drive to work or study. Rio is good for people who come with wonderful turism companies that will do everything to make them fall in love with the city, and they will. So, appreciate the view and hope it lasts!

The pictures are really beautiful because the city has beautiful places. But these places are just like famous suburbs in the U.S. Suburbs in Rio are really different. If you just want to look at the bright and rich side of the city and forget about all the problems we're facing here, real problems, not the ones some people have in an astonishing swimming pool, that's ok. I'll clap my hands to the pictures and come back to MY real Rio.
