Kind of sad, actually. I used to shop in Dartmouth Sears and Penhorn quite a bit in years gone by. Sorry to see them go.

Oh well, time marches on...

Waffle Love
October 16, 2017 ·

Hey Everyone đź’•

Sad news...the building we are in has been sold and we were given notice to quit by the new owners who plan to knock it down. Our last day open will be this October 29th
I was hoping they would open in another location but have not seen any indications that it will happen...

Dennis and Acadian Recorder Buildings; the Province is now looking at leasing the two properties, and the parking lot between to a developer; and have approached the five developers that were interested in buying the properties. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-s...ines-1.4690678

Given the location — Province House on one side and Halifax City Hall, Grand Parade and St. Paul's church on the other — Hines said the government couldn't overlook the historical significance of the area.

While he's "anxious" to accelerate the process, the minister said the ability to maintain ownership of the property whenever a lease expires means the government has the right to control the nature of the development.
...sounds like the government intends to maintain the character of those two buildings and guarantee their survival into the future. I'm looking forward to seeing what will happen here.

It is really a gem of an area but it's already been so compromised by redevelopment that there isn't much room for more losses if the intent is for the Province House area to have a heritage district feel. Both the Acadian Recorder and Dennis add a lot to the character of the area. I hope they are preserved more completely than through a basic facadectomy, particularly a bad one that closes off their street level entrances and makes them lifeless vestigial decorations on a squat box.

Hopefully the province will release some of the plans soon. This development could have a big impact if done well. This is the most prominent empty lot in the city.

I agree... and I might add that the parking lot abutting Province House has GOT to go... hopefully, whatever is built on these sites can provide parking spaces to serve Province House.

I suspect redevelopment can't be far off. Hopefully they will choose to retain at least elements of the church in the new development and not just level it. It is one of the more attractive and unique church buildings around.

Obviously the scale is much smaller, but I'd love to see them convert it like this one in Montreal.

Hey that's pretty cool, especially when you look in 3D view and see the balconies cut into the roof!

Pastor "Zwicker is very pleased with the plans that buyer LTS Properties has for the the old stone church, which has a heritage designation.'Their intention for our site is to not make any changes at all,” he said. “It’s going to be a live theatre playhouse venue. That would certainly add value to the community.'
“We have a lease-back agreement for at least two and up to four years with the purchaser,” A live theatre in that building would be great.

Great news. Thanks!

Live theatre would be a nice addition to the neighborhood. It's always been a great place to live, but it is getting even better all the time.

I believe somewhere in their website they refer to that as Demone and a Robie.

Here's a rendering of landscaping work at Province House. This is the southern end which is already public space (the northern end is the one with surface parking).

There should NOT be any parking there. PERIOD. Why should they be so entitled. They removed parking at City Hall years ago, the same should be done here.
