This is a great angle that you don't see very often. Great Picture. This was once the main entrance to downtown from North Omaha. After the riots in Black North Omaha in the late 1960's, the city government, in a not very subtle message to North Omaha had a hotel built in the middle of 16th street (The Double Tree in the lower right of the picture) blocking the main road between the Central Business District and North Omaha.
Only recently has the city truly embraced connecting North Omaha back to the downtown area. The NoDo (North Downtown) area where this picture was taken is the city's main focus for new development and there are some redevelopment projects in the heart of North Omaha to revitalize the old North Omaha business district.

It's really a shame they did that. There aren't any other streets from the heart of DT to north Omaha. There are some on the western end but they don't lead to anything right now like 16th St. does.
It was a huge mistake. If you look at old pictures of Downtown Omaha 16th street was the heart of the city. I think part of the reason 16th street has never taken off again is because the way the street was blocked off.
