Charleston; Away From The Tourists.

I have no idea what these neighborhoods are. I just was wandering around. Some were ghettoish, others very high end. All contained variations on a single theme (pun intended).

i never miss one of your threads, herodotus. you always impress with the clarity of your shots and the depth of coverage you provide in any place you visit.

that said, it's another great thread. granted, i like the more urban parts of charleston better but these are still very dynamic neighborhoods

There is something profoundly southern about Charleston. I hope to get there soon - until then, these great photos will serve as the next best thing.

Those ghettoish ones are some pretty nice ghettos.

Great set hero. Charleton is so walkable and a wonderful place to wander about. I gotta ask what's going on with these houses (and the structures between them)?

Thanks man.

Thanks man.
Those houses are "Charleston singles", which is the main local vernacular in housing. The houses are arranged with the gable end facing the street. There is usually a piazza along the side of the house. That is what you see between the buildings. Many of the piazzas have a door facing the street, with entry to the house from the piazza. Singles can range from small workers cottages, all the way to spectacular mansions, as you will see when I post the main Charleston thread during the next few days.

Thanks hero. I've seen the mansion type down there, but hadn't noticed the enclosed version.
