I was worried about that... we might summon that guy back.

Although our friend can get a little obsessed with observation decks, he isn’t wrong. Austin really could use an observation deck with decent elevation. Those drone videos from Sewaneetigers really make me excited for the day Austin gets an aerial viewing platform.

Tower With Possible Observation Deck Proposed

A planning application had been filed with the City of Austin for extending the height of a proposed skyscraper at 507 First Street in the South Central Waterfront District. The plan calls for extending the height from 490 feet to 540 feet and a possible observation deck at the top. This is potentially some big news for Austin.

I certainly agree with you and this will be a big change if this tower has an observation deck. Examples of otherwise purely residential skyscrapers with observation decks open to the public on their top floors include the Eureka Tower in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Q1 in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, the Sapphire Tower in Istanbul, and the Palm Tower in Dubai.

the experts are quiet after convincing themselves an observation deck on a residential building wasn't a realistic possibility.

It is realistic as there are residential skyscrapers with observation decks on their top floors like the Eureka Tower in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, the Q1 in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, Palm Tower in Dubai, and the Sapphire Tower in Istanbul. Furthermore, the John Hancock Center in Chicago has an observation deck and that building is a mixed use residential and office skyscraper. On top of this, the Mahanakhon in Bangkok and the Landmark 81 in Saigon have observation decks on their top floors despite being mixed use hotel and residential skyscrapers. Finally, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, The Shard in London, Lotte World Tower in Seoul, China Zun in Beijing, and the Mohammed VI Tower in Rabat, Morocco have observation decks despite being mixed use residential, office, and hotel skyscrapers. So, I see no reason why this building in Austin can't have an observation deck.

I'll two pieces my throw in...errr I'm dyslexic. This particular location on the far south of all other high rise and taller buildings might be perfect. It will allow for the top floor to be divided in half. The sunny south half for the residential pool, while the north half facing the skyline could have an observation deck with the mechanical stuff above it. It appears that the footprint is big enough for this. I will entertain the possibility. Why not? Am I being bad by continuing this thought?

Nope. I think it's a pertinent subject given that Towers thought it was worth covering. That at least takes this conversation from your typical "hey wouldn't it be cool if..." type thread to something more substantial.

170' now. A ZC to 540' is giving the NA anxiety attacks.

What floor is the observation deck planned for and how high would it be.

That's so comical to me. Eons ago when the Spring was built, the Old West Austin Neighborhood Assn was also having anxiety attacks about it, fearing a contagion of high rises that would spread across Lamar.

This too will pass...

There will be a lot of tourism as well as this building will actually have an observation deck open to the public.

I hesitate in possibly re-starting more observation deck rehashing, but the PDA filing has been updated for a second time to increase the height. No specific height is mentioned, but an update is asking for a FAR increase from 15:1 to 24:1.
