Ah right. My question still stands for Galt then haha
Found this...
During Blue Ribbon’s more than century-long lifespan, the Galt name became a Winnipeg, and eventually Manitoban, household name. Today it graces an entire city block in Winnipeg as well as several heritage buildings in the historic Exchange District. https://www.empireadvance.ca/opinion...hat-1.23855141
The commemorative plaque at that fountain at the corner of Broadway and Donald St. reads:
Quote:
Presented to the people of Winnipeg October 1970 by the M.E.P.C. group of companies. and the Metropolitan Corporation of Greater Winnipeg to commemorate the centenary of Manitoba and the fiftieth anniversary of the first supply of water from Shoal Lake to the metropolitan area.
What is the M.E.P.C. group companies? Couldn't be Mountain Equipment Co-op nor could it be Monarch Life.
There's a set of stairs at St Johns park leading down to the rivers edge. Anyone know if there was anything of substance that it lead to at one point?
Could be left over from when the River Rouge, or PaddleWheel group's used the park as an alternative dock when the Red River was high and they could not dock at their usual docks?

Don’t think so, those steps predate the river boats, similar stairs could also be found across the river in Elmwood (Roxy) Park. No idea either on what they were for.
It's really a shame they couldn't have rebuilt this building to it's original form. It was quite magnificent.

^ Agreed. It was such a grandiose cathedral. Gaboury's replacement is really well done and does a great job integrating the new building with the remains of the old, but it doesn't even come close to matching the scale of the old place.
Thanks for the colourizations. A lot of those are from my collections. It’s interesting to see them in a new light, even if it’s not always entirely representative of the real appearance.

I am in 100% agreement. This was spectacular in scale & design. rivalling some houses of worship in Europe. The interior was likely the most grandiose of all churches ever constructed in Winnipeg.
