Maybe. But I found my source where I read why it built wide. It was the first newly built object on the Expo lands and was supposed to be a "much needed scenic short cut through the pre-Expo railyard wasteland" and was built as a 4 to 6 lane "would-be speedway".

of note in the pics .... NO law courts ...... ORIGINAL VIADUCT! .... and Bentall 1 under construction and look at all those surface lots!

The midrise centre left in that last shot - is it still there or demolished for Sutton Place? The road its on was, I think, diverted to connect to Smithe.

i.e. a modified version of the perimeter expressway proposed in the 60s or 70s (which some at City Hall (like the viaducts)) have a continuing dislike for (hence the "taming" wioth the "multi-way" concept , bike lanes and future streetcar narrowing the overall RoW).

From the inside upstairs behind the blue (originally yellow) steel panels there's a concrete block wall set into a "new" set of concrete colums which means the entire facade was removed. The Rex was a renovation of an earlier building dating from 1907.

Here is some high quality film footage of the first ever Grey Cup Parade in Vancouver from 1955. It's replete with all good stuff from the 1950s, including funny hat-wearing "Elk Club" types, lovely baton twirlers and virginal beauty queens:

The weird thing for me, living on the North Shore since 1988 and driving through coal harbour at least weekly, is that area seemed to change overnight. Basically the only thing I noticed was the "cube" building on Georgia and Broughton stopped having a great ocean view underneath it at some point.

Back until some time in the 90s, there was the great road along the waterfront there which was awesome for bypassing Georgia Street to the north shore during the evening rush hour.

I was confused by the first photo, but then I realised the tower shown is actually the "IBM Tower". The TD Tower looks finished and occupied - its hiding behind IBM & peeking out to the right. The rest of Pacific Centre north of Georgia is still behind the hoarding - what we know today as H&M and Canaccord Tower.

How many times has the Granville Street Mall been ripped up & rebuilt?
This photo looks like the first rebuild to make it a transit & pedestrian mall.

Thanks for the explanation - I wasn't sure why you couldn't see the entire rotunda of Eatons in that shot.
