The last big excavator was hoisted out from the bottom of the hole on Friday.

It's funny, I always perceived that block as pretty flat, but when you see it compared to the level floor there is actually quite a grade change. Amazing how much effect a small slope has over a longer distance. Hopefully the building design does a good job dealing with this.

As I've developed a habit of doing here from time to time, I've found some photos of structures that occupied this block previously and have decided to bestow upon the readers of this forum these ocular delights. OK, perhaps a little overstated, but here they are:

We all know of the Maritime Life building, which was just torn down.

These are from the Municipal Archives from 1964 - the building would have been just 10 years old when these photos were taken:

More from Noticed in Nova Scotia blog:

Nova Scotia Trust building:

Maritime Life building in recent years, while occupied by BMO and other smaller businesses/restaurants/pubs:

Before the Maritime Life building, there was the First Baptist Church, these photos from NS archives:

From 1939 (larger version available at link below), view from Queen Street:

Then there are these photos, taken March 12, 1942 - the day it burnt down:

https://novascotia.ca/archives/EastC...es.asp?ID=2999

https://novascotia.ca/archives/EastC...es.asp?ID=3003

Many bystanders were present:

Many readers may not realize this, but the long building in the background (that up to recently housed the Port of Wines among other businesses) was once a car dealership (Citadel Motors before it moved to the corner of Sackville and Brunswick?).

And again from Noticed in Nova Scotia, the Doyle block location approx year 1938:

Two Apple Stores in a city the size of Halifax would be unprecedented in Canada. I think SGR would be a perfect location though.

Does anyone know what the large round feature in the northwest corner (doyle/queen) is? It looks like it'll be a round concrete slab, but what on earth for?

Although the renderings don't show it very well, there will be a round room on the main level in the northwest corner. Could this be what you are referring to?

If you look closely at the rendering on their website, you can make it out.

I find it odd how the Queen Street side of the building is at a slant similar to the street grade. Has any other building in Halifax been designed this way? Here are the renderings - http://www.westwoodgroup.ca/wp-conte...esentation.pdf. The 2nd and 3rd storeys along Spring Garden Road appear to taper to just one storey along Doyle Street.

The location of Ryan Duffy's has a similar treatment:

This will be part of a porte cochère providing access for cars as a guest drop for the boutique hotel as well access to the underground parking.

The beginnings of a porte cochère. Cars would probably enter off Queen and exit onto Doyle and maybe a cafe could go inside the circular area.

I wonder what boutique hotel is going in? Maybe it will be the St. Germaine, the boutique hotel associated with the company that owns ALT hotels.

I can't understand why such an architectural feature is hidden in that corner, and not put in at queen/spring garden.
