HONG KONG from the 35th Floor -- New views from a new home
Two months ago I moved into a new apartment. The view is pretty nice so I thought I'd share it here.
This is the western view over the neighbourhood of Tai Kok Tsui. Beyond that is the port and the Stonecutters Bridge.
The southeastern view looks over Mongkok towards Homantin. The tall building you see in the far distance is One Island East in Quarry Bay.
The northeastern view looks over the neighbourhoods of Prince Edward, Yau Yat Chuen and Kowloon Tong. Wong Tai Sin is in the distance.
Looking back over Tai Kok Tsui. It's a working-class neighbourhood that was once on the waterfront, but is now landlocked thanks to land reclamation. It has been intensively redeveloped in recent years with lots of new apartment towers.
The tall building is Langham Place. I've been able to see it from all three of my Hong Kong apartments. It's sort of like a beacon.
This was the scene when I woke up a couple of weeks ago. There was a terrible fire that started in a street market and spread to a couple of nearby tenement buildings. Because the fire was so intense, and the fire escapes in some buildings were blocked, nine people died. Arson is suspected but the police still haven't found any clues as to how the fire started.
The streetcorner you see here is a terminus for buses heading to and from mainland China. There's always lots of mainlanders milling around. They are... distinct from Hong Kong people.

Ah ... that new block with the Maxim on the ground floor!
Not quite! I looked at a place in there but even the cheapest flat on the lowest floor was way out of my budget. I live two blocks away on Reclamation Street.
