The Lovejoy neighborhood, sometimes referred to as East Lovejoy, is the furthest east neighborhood within the Buffalo city limits, about 3 miles (5 km) from downtown Buffalo. Much of the area is also referred to as Iron Island, as it is surrounded on all sides by railroad tracks and yards. Initially settled by German immigrants in the 1830s, it later became dominated by Italian immigrants which grew separately from the larger West Side Italian community. Today the area is a mix of several native and immigrant ethnic groups. Many of the homes in the area date to the mid 1800s, the oldest possibly built before 1830 per city records.
