Looks like a policeman on the corner by Woolworth’s.
60 years ago that store still had the pneumatic tubes (like those at bank drive-thrus) which took your money from the sales area up to a central cashier and returned the change.
The store also had a lunch counter for “whites only” that was targeted with anti-segregation sit-in demonstrations in the early 1960s, as were some others on Congress Avenue.
The old formerly grand Capitol Theater was reduced to showing “nudie movies” in the ‘60s. I think at the time the photo was taken, the theatre was operated by Cactus Pryor’s dad.
Just found this picture that I took in December 2003 from 6th Street. A little creepy. It was just a few months before Frost tower's official lighting ceremony.

I was going thru some of my dad's stuff and came across this photo....had to be taken early 60's looking north from the bend right before Riverside drive.

Nice! Would love to see a (before/after) from this perspective
Found this map on the UT Libraries twitter page. I'm thinking it dates back to at least the late 60s since it is missing the Jester dorms on 21st at Speedway
That is either late 1940s or early 1950s.
A lot of those little student housing shacks were not there when I first enrolled in 1962.
The Modern Languages building by the Union was gone and replaced by the first Harry Ransom Center.
Kinsolving Dorm is not shown. Hemphill’s location is different.
Co-op on the Drag is also not shown.
A few other things are different too... from the 1960s.
Tennis courts were on the south side of Memorial Stadium in the early ‘60s.
The new Art building was on San Jacinto north of the stadium.
Haha, that you even saw them, it does look like they're taking selfies. Time travelers is suppose.
Clark Field is shown between Texas Memorial Museum and the stadium. Clark Field was torn down in the late 60's and moved across the interstate and it doesn't show Jester Center and PCL.

And most telling of all, the 6-Pack is not there between the Tower & Littlefield Fountain.
And the B Hall dorm is there. It was torn down in the early 1950s. The absence of the buildings on the South Mall make me think this map may even be from the late 30s.
