Looking at the photos of the progress here, I was unimpressed. I thought it was straight-up ugly and already even more dated than the postmodern mess across the street.
I visited again this weekend and finally got a good look at it. Very nice! That's a great street presence and I actually like how the concrete turned out. Unless they somehow botch the glass facade I don't see how this can turn out badly.
So the new development The Doyle across from Halifax Central Library
•heard they have scooped UK retailer OASIS from Halifax Shopping Centre
•They will have a top floor 360° all glass restaurant
•and now I hear it will be home to a new larger Lululemon
Those retail rumours are great. I still don't like what was demolished for this and I developed a precast allergy by living in early 2000's Halifax but this looks like it will substantially grow the retail area around Spring Garden Road. It already looks like something out of a medium-sized city. A few years ago, Spring Garden Road had almost a small town feel in parts. Then again, the surface lot next to the library on SGR that is in the foreground of that photo still looks like something out of a small town.
I hope we will get similar announcements for the Roy.
The construction fencing may keep trade down for a while.
I hope the windows get installed on the upper floors above the entrance before next week or else it may be a little difficult and risky to enter and exit.
