The crane will need to be raised at least another 4 or 5 times before it reaches its final height.

While SkyCity is "dead in the water", I am still hoping that after 300 is DONE that the former Trib site and former Dominion Motors site are developed soon in the next decade fer sure.

It's unfortunate skycity fell through but hopefully something tall will go up in that spot soon.

^Thanks for that!

The building looks like it will be narrower than I originally thought, in some of the renderings it looked like it might be bulkier than according to the diagram.

It still sucks, how the anchor store in the new construction, is just some random gym... maybe in the future, some grocery retail would be nice?

Unless the Exchange has landed a grocery store, since i left Winnipeg two years ago?

From what was mentioned before, it sounds like the Shoppers Drug Mart is getting a beefed up grocery department. I don't think one apartment tower can sustain a Safeway or whatever on its own... it will take more residential development for that to happen.

Downtown grocers have been courted for all the recent major developments and none of them bit. Must be a reason.

a couple years ago when I visited Toronto, I didn't notice any big name grocers. There were more boutique grocers. There was definitely nothing along the lines of a big box grocer in the heart of downtown Toronto like people here seem to suggest is require for a thriving downtown.

I know this topic has been covered a lot here, and there is certainly some mixed feelings about whether a large downtown grocer is needed right in the downtown area or whether boutique grocers would fit the bill. I used to be sold on the need for the large retailer but I have changed my mind the last little while. I think many people drive to the "large" grocer of their choice (Safeway, etc.) no matter where they live, so having to pop over to the Osborne Safeway or into St. Boniface for a large grocery shopping trip doesn't seem to be too much of a stretch for downtown dwellers. in the mean time there are a few smaller grocers (and hopefully boutique grocers) to fill the "bread and milk" needs of casual shopping.

When the Bay then Zellers had the grocer downstairs it was always busy. And IIRC they were always overpriced too.

If Selkirk, Winkler, Portage La Prairie and Steinbach can support a grocery store, i don't see why downtown Winnipeg could not.
