A second-alarm fire at a high-rise building in Phoenix has caused an elevator to become stuck, trapping people inside, according to initial reports.

The fire is reportedly in a building on the 3800 block of north Central Avenue, and there is smoke on the eighth floor.

Two helicopters have been seen circling the vicinity.

No further information was immediately available.

An apparent faulty motor temporarily trapped people inside an elevator at a Phoenix high-rise building Monday morning, causing smoke in the elevator shaft and triggering a big response from firefighters.

A group of people became stuck in an elevator on the 20th floor of the a multi-business building at 3838 North Central Avenue in the City Square around 9:30 a.m., said Jay Arthur, Phoenix fire department spokesman.

Smoke was reported in the eighth floor elevator shaft and the building was smoothly evacuated without panic, Arthur said.

There was no reported injuries or damage to the building, Arthur said. No one was injured and there was no damage to the building, Arthur said.

The people trapped in the elevator managed to open the door themselves and left the building, Arthur said. Officials believe that the elevator stopped due to a motor-related equipment failure.

The property manager reported that there were between 500 and 600 people in the building at the time of the evacuation.

Evacuees applauded the firefighters as they exited the building and made their way back to the fire trucks.

Evacuation supervisors had no comment.
