Wow! What a difference only 10 days made! The hole is deeper, and we have a tower crane on-site!

By the way, excellent work on all of the before-and-after pictures you have provided to this thread!

If they really are done digging, I'm going to miss this hole process!! Its been interesting, and surprising, how deep the old footers and other crap was. If the digging today takes time back 100 years ago when it must have all been done by hand, or close to it, the time must have not been that much of an issue.

I wonder if the crane will be used to pull out the various toys that are still working in the hole. Maybe it will be used to go down another level.

They are still removing lots of dirt. I went by there and there were 3 dump trucks on 15th street. A small back hoe was piling up the dirt so that a larger one with longer boom could remove it and place it in the truck. I'm not sure how the dirt will be removed once the pile drops too low for the boom to reach. They were also doing some testing of the crane.

so it looks like they brought in a back hoe with extra long boom to get the rest of the dirt out.

yesterday they were tamping down the soil at the bottom of the pit in the middle of the site. I guess that's a sign there will be no more excavation and rebar will be showing up soon.

And perhaps a drilling rig or two and some caissons? Has anyone mentioned what kind of foundation this will be?

Indeed! When a laser/transit shows up in the bottom of the hole (upper left of center), as well as stakes and neatly painted orange lines, footings are on the way!

My guess is that the unearthed "flying saucer" is the top of a rock ledge or a bedrock outcropping that will be incorporated into a footing.

I bet they'll dig it out, or break it up. That's one job they have lots of practice in doing.

Possible, but I've seen--and actually been involved with one in a residential project--where a ledge or bedrock has been incorporated into a footing. I kind of doubt that they'll bring in a hoe ram at this point to break it up, given that they've leveled and smoothed out the bottom and are laying out and marking footing locations. They would have done that before layout. But with this project, who knows?
