Sao Paolo makes NYC look like a small town. Unbelievable. I think all arrogant young self-absorbed New Yorkers and Americans who think NYC is the be all and end all of the world need to either visit Sao Paolo or watch that video.

On the other hand, seeing this really makes me wish New York had more lenient zoning laws and less annoying Nimbys. Then we'd have a more competitive cityscape, particularly in the outer boroughs.

What explains the layout of the city? For instance, why are there "spots" of lowrise neighborhoods scattered throughout and surrounded by highrises? Is there zoning that prevents highrises here, poor transit, other?

It just seems so random. Tokyo I know tends to concentrate around transit, but what about Sao Paulo.

Yup, its zoning that prevents highrises in those areas. But of course, city planning officials consider transit when zoning.

Sao Paulo is impressive for sure, but it seems to be mainly a difference in how people live. Americans still for the most part live in single family homes. NYC is more spread out, but Manhattan seems to be taller and denser than anything in Sao Paulo. The NYC metro is similar in population to SP but sprawls over a larger area.

Great photos.

I never knew about it either. I googled and I still dont understand exactly what its about.

apparently, in 2005, there was the Year of Brazil in France. The presidents of the two countries than agreed for a Year of France in Brazil, in 2009.

What its about exactly? It seems to be organized by the International Relation Ministeries of both countries. It seems there will be lots of projects and seminars... about what I am not sure.

sounds interesting nonetheless. It also inspired me to research French-Brazilians, which there are, according to wiki 500,000 to 1,000,000 Brazilians of French descent today.

I think it's funny when people ask where someplace as large as Sao Paulo is. Especially when Google maps will give you a response faster than any forumer. It's just such a huge city...bigger than New York, city and metro.

Thanks a lot for the photo tour. Very beautiful.
