Did anybody watch the 1 hour “Impossible Engineering” show on the Science Channel that featured the Independent last night?

I didn't have a way to stream the Science channel, so I missed it. I'll have to wait for one of those sketchy youtube channels to upload it in 17 parts three years from now.

yeppers. It actually was pretty interesting. Austin got a ton of downtown airtime. They usually replay episodes so if you missed it, you probably will have other chances to catch it. They did over hype the uniqueness and height.

The Science Channel is uploading episodes to their website - if you have a cable subscription you should be able to see it.

I paid to watch the episode on amazon prime and I really enjoyed it! Made me appreciate the building design even more.

I'm with you! Had zero clue the crisscross steel beams within the spire played such a critical role. I like the spire that much more which cracks me up

From ThyPiGuy in the Block 185 thread:

I wanted to shout out to the Indy for having the second-best lighting in our skyline, after only the iconic Frost Tower IMO. It's warm, somehow both subtle and also very visible, you can see it from all over town like a paper lantern floating over the skyline.

Looks like the Science Channel has published the Independent episode of the Impossible Engineering show to its website.

https://www.sciencechannel.com/tv-sh...per-skyscraper

Not sure if it can be viewed by everyone or only those with certain provider subscriptions (DirecTV, etc.)

It turned out better than I had expected

Still just for TV provider logins... YouTube TV not included, unfortunately

Well, walking around downtown yesterday. I feel like whoever designed the crown on the independent must have been inspired by either a wwf cage match or a prison recreation yard.

I noticed that as well. Does anyone know why this is? I remember it was supposed to be a really nice lighting system - I believe the same company that did the lighting on the Empire State building. I'm confused how they could be no longer be working after such a short time.

IIRC they had some issues with their 4th of July lighting, and I think they’ve been off since. Frost lights have been off for a while too

All high rises in Austin should have lights off right now for the annual bird migration. We are right in the North American central flyway!

Ahh okay. This crossed my mind but I didn't realize the period of time is so long. That makes sense then. Hopefully, come December they'll resume operation.

The new Austonian lights are really bright. I saw them the other night and they're actually bright enough to cast light beams upward at the north and south ends of the roof and that was with the low humidity we've had lately.
