I find it interesting how there aren't that many highrises on the waterfront over there.

That part of the formerly industrial south side of False Creek was developed in the 70s when residential highrises were not so popular in Vancouver. Give it time; it will probably be all redeveloped eventually, but it may never be high rises because of the views that would be blocked.

Just to echo what Architype said, just give it some time... I would almost reckon that after the high rise developments around the stadium are well under way that proposals for the area around it will start to take off.

Another one for kool maudit. Not quite Kosovo, but close enough.

What a gorgeous day in St. John's!

Video Link

Leslie Street confuses the fuck out of me. They built these GIANT retaining walls for each individual lawn, BUT the retaining walls are all slanted so the lawns are still sideways. What was the purpose? The only thing I can figure is to create parking spaces.. but everyone parks on the street anyway.

The fog monster lurks just outside the Narrows, waiting to turn this 18C day into an 8C day.

funny story about that. i heard through the grapevine that the discussions surrounding kosovo's flag were quite tense. they were showing the NATO and UNMIK representatives idea after idea, and nothing was taking. things were getting frustrating and nobody knew why. finally, madeleine albright couldn't take it anymore, and snapped something like "don't you get it? lose the fucking bird! we're not doing anything with that goddamned bird."

the owner of a bar near mother tereza street in pristina still maintains that his idea was the best, and flies it over his establishment.

it's the american flag, but with black and red stripes instead of red and white. instead of the stars? you know who.

That's awesome.

They almost followed Bosnia's solution for a flag with colours and symbols specifically chosen to reflect absolutely nothing about the country or its people in order to avoid offending any ethnic group.

At least Kosovo got its map on there. They could have stylized it as a diamond shape. Would've been cool.

they didn't want to allow serbia any more fears of a NATO-created "greater albania" than already existed. russia being there and all i guess.

Yeah - it would have been impossible to use the bird.

Someone suggested this mess for us:

It's a combination flag like the Union Flag. One is a white cross on a purple background for Vinland (Newfoundland), the other is a green cross on a white background for Labrador.

But, if we were ever independent again, we'd have to use two official flags. Labrador does not feel at all represented by the tricolour and they have their own which is well and truly adopted by the people there (officially displayed at every town hall, etc.). So we'd have to fly these two everywhere:

Two flags would be a cute, additional quirk, though. And we can't combine them. There's no attractive way to mix those two flags without getting rid of something that's very symbolically important.

I love that flag proposal, but I would definitely make it horizontally symmetrical (like the flags of England, Scotland, and the Union Jack) so that it looks less Scandinavian and more British-Irish.
