Well if they do build this tunnel I bet it will have about a three mile long and two mile wide set of ramps, retaining walls and approaches on each end and everything will be made out of concrete. That's how we do things down here.

Actually, our own big dig might not be that bad if it involved capping the Connector and putting a boulevard at the newly-created street level.

This concept, though, would be a sickening waste of funds.

How about the ventilation for these things?
Isn't that considered a point-source pollution

Wouldn't this massive influx of emissions associated with this project violate the Clean Air Act?

[please?]

...and you think these neighborhoods get mad over building heights on the beltline...lol...you just wait till they get wind of this. In all seriousness though, they will waste who knows how much money just STUDYING this (we can really do much to stop that). Its at the top of the DOTs wish list...out of touch just doesn't seem to be strong enough language. When Oxymoron proposed this it was obviously just political jockying...but whats the DOTs excuse???

How would tolling 285 reduce traffic on the connector?

The DOT representatives who proposed this should go jump off a bridge (my suggestion, the concrete eyesore on 17th).

Well I noticed there is a good bit of construction going on at the old Home Depot off of Piedmont. Is that for the furniture store that's going in there?

I dont know what these guys are smokin at the DOT??!! Heaven forbid they think about mass transit instead. We could have rail everywhere for the money this crap will cost
And I quote from the article, "For people trying to get from the northern suburbs to downtown or across the metro area, it would be a boon -- for a price. "I'd be all for it, if it was all underground," said Donald Cox, who lives in Sandy Springs and used to commute on the Downtown Connector every day. "I'm willing to pay extra gas taxes for projects like that," in addition to a toll, he said."

Wow. Just wow. So you would pay extra taxes to spend more money on gas to build a tunnel of roads that will exceed capacity as soon as they build it. Yet nobody wants to pay taxes to get high speed rail from these same suburbs (above or under ground) to get people to the city that won't exceed capacity for decades.

Wow. That's all I can say.

It seems like such a nobrainer to me...but road builders in this state run the show at the DOT, and this being a "private/public" cooperation project I am sure there are several road builders salivating at the thought of building this project. Rail just doesn't have that kind of "cash influence", nor the clout at the gold dome. Screw the constituents...whos gonna give me more campaign cash

Well there are probably more folks who want to get through downtown than to downtown. So at first blush a tunnel may sound attractive to them. But you know it will turn out to be a disaster and cost a lot more than that $4 billion they are talking about. Seems to me you could spend a fraction of that and come up with a lot of improvements that make more sense.

On the Home Depot thing, I was thinking that looked pretty big for a drug store.

The Home Depot on Ponce is getting a drug store where the catering operation An Affair to Remember (or something similar) used to be located - directly adjacent to the beltline.

The Home Depot on Piedmont at Lindbergh is getting the furniture store - in the old Home Depot space.

According to the AJC, Vice President Biden is coming to town on Thursday to make an important announcement with Sonny Pardue about something stimulus related.

http://blogs.ajc.com/gold-dome-live/2009...nouncement/?cxntfid=blogs_gold_dome_live

Here's hoping it might be something transit related (and hopefully not a ridiculous tunnel)

http://atlanta.bizjournals.com/atlanta/stories/2009/12/14/story3.html

and also in this weeks abc, and i quote, "...owner jackson oats shaw in 2010 will market a site for a new tower next to centennial." not sure what site it could be, because i am too lazy, but im thinking it must have something to do with the greenway?
