The design's kick-ass Dac and Daquan, people just want it to be a bit taller. Thats the whole story about.

Taller might have been better, as you say, but as the old saying goes, and this comes from an old '70s song;

But remember brothers and sisters, you can still stand tall. Just be thankful for what you've got.

I am very thankful for what we got regarding the WTC. About 5 years ago we were going in the direction where a highrise would never be built in Manhattan again. I think we did pretty good with these new buildings. Time will only make them more appreciated and loved.

A bad design is a bad design, no matter what scale it's wrought on.

The Freedom Tower will be just fine as is. The earlier designs of the tower were disliked by a lot of people, myself included.

But since it was made the same structural height as the old Twins, that's all I care about. At least it's not a wimpy one like the time when Silverstein wanted it to be only 70 floors.

and you never know , once LARRY , takes over the site WTC #1 might be a few ft higher , like WTC #2 has . Anyway 1368 is high by any standards, besides CHICAGO, there is not a tall building at that height. in the U.S.

All of the towers heights WERE increaced twice, I believe. Once in the 2nd design and once in the present design.

But the STRUCTURAL height was increased on the Freedom Tower once, I believe, in the present design.

After receiving much pressure from NY'rs and maybe the officials as well, Silverstein decided to make the structural height about the same height as the old Twins just before the present design was unveiled.

A structural question: Does the concrete provide enough of a fire barrier around the steel so that they do not have to fireproof the steel columns, or would they be better served to fireproof the steel first, then cast the concrete around it? I would assume that they don't need the fireproofing because they're enclosing the steel without it. I just wondered if someone on the forum had a more technical answer to the question.

I would think regardless of the concrete around the steel, a layer of fire proofing material is intergrated within the columns. With the technology, the concrete could be fire resistant.

Thats just my thought.

It looks as though the steel columns that are there now are not being fireproofed first.

And yes Dac, concrete IS fireproof to a certain degree. Hence the reason why the cores in this tower and 7 WTC are built with concrete.

Now that's a seminal image right there.. not too long from now this thing will be shooting for the sky, and all the bitching and moaning about it taking forever to get things going, with the FT and the entire site, will eventually be a dim memory to be fondly recalled over drinks at our favorite bar
