I don't know of any fire suppressant that can handle a car fire in a parking garage, and a sprinkler system would be futile. It can't reach inside, under the hood, or under the vehicle. In one of the links you can see a firefighter getting up close and personal with a power saw to gain access to the fire. And, mechanical exhaust systems are not designed to remove the high volume of toxic smoke from a single car fire, let alone multiple car fires once it spreads, inevitable the way cars are packed in sometimes. Once rubber, plastic, oil and fuel ignites and burns, it is very difficult to extinguish even with copious amounts of water or foam. Then there's the heat, I've been singed fighting car fires on I35. There are many incidents of car fires in parking garages. I'll post a few links so you can get an idea how severe they can be and how dangerous and destructive. The one in a Houston tower is particularly disturbing. I'm just saying I am amazed for all these years how lucky we are we haven't seen any here yet with all the parking garages and podiums we have here. Its get worse when you add offices and housing on top of them.
Take a look at these links. You'll see this is not uncommon and why I don't even like parking my cars in my garage. I have fought fires at houses started by car fires on at least 3 occasions. Not trying to be Mr. Doom here, but with all the parking garages we have...
