Looks like the U is moving away from the proposal of a new arena and instead is planning a major renovation of the Huntsman Center. The renovation would likely reduce the overall seating capacity from today’s roughly 15,000 seats, but add more premium seating, suites, and updated amenities to improve the game-day experience.

I heard the U was caught off guard by the SEG x Live Nation announcement a few months ago and had to pivot to a Huntsman Center renovation. They viewed a new arena next to Rice Eccles as a venue that would capture the mid-sized concert SEG is targeting and didn't want to compete.

In other news, GIV group/PHF shared renderings of a new residential (apartments and condos) building adjacent to their recent 515 Arbor Project at 515 East 100 South. I think the work this group is doing is some of the best in the Mountain West. The building, if the renderings prove accurate, may be one of the most visually interesting in the city.

Here in Orlando, they built a really long residential tower like this. I don't know its dimensions, but it is downtown. I don't find it offensive but it does look weird. I would imaging people would not like this if it was east of DT SLC.

It would be overlooked shortly. Nyc has plenty of weird large buildings but thats the fun of it

Im just glad it isn't all glass and has a nice geometry to it

When it comes to tower design in Salt Lake right now, at least aesthetically, I think what matters most is that a building isn’t a total bore to look at or experience. Even worse would be something that turns into an outright eyesore.

I’ve certainly warmed up to the Salt Palace Hyatt, despite the fact that I’d prefer a less wall-like version. I’ll take more walls right now if they’re at least unique or pretty like that one.

Glad to see this. I've always felt that Memory Grove had not quite reached its full potential yet.

Agree, I like the look of it and how its design meshes with the HK, which I've always admired. 1st South seems to be heading in a vertical direction. If we get the tower next to Harmons, the Cumming Tower on 2nd east, and this one over the next few years, plus the expansion coming up to the west, that skyline view from the north of downtown could become a lot more impressive.

Big, if true. The building permit has evidence of some recent-ish activity on the citizen portal (07/2025). It also has a note saying "PERMIT BEING REACTIVATED AFTER EXPIRING".

I'm curious if anyone has heard anything recently about the church's plans for Cascade, or east side of Harmons. With temple square construction wrapping up later this year, I wonder if they will reactivate one of these other dormant projects?
