13C and cloudy today. Small pockets of sunshine. Like I said earlier, we recorded the highest dewpoint ever for February at 10C. Even though it was 2C cooler than yesterday, it felt milder (compared to being in the shade yesterday) because of the higher dewpoint.

Kind of a dark day but no complain at those temperatures.

Low of 8C this morning.

The warmspot was Saint-Anicet, QC at 19.3C.

The warmest low was Grand Etang, NS at 9.2C.

Wild windy night last night in the Capital. Black sky, lightning, thunder, heavy rain, gusty winds. Balcony furniture tossed to one end, thankfully nothing lost. -13 this morning after a high of almost 16 degrees yesterday. Weather Network is showing a big warm up for this weekend with a max of +17 on Tuesday

The cold front is passing through Moncton as I type.

Currently 0C and light freezing rain at 9 AM. There was a brief band of snow at around 8 AM, which has stopped. It was +11C at 4 AM, but, it had dropped to +2C by 7 AM. It will be -7C by the middle of the afternoon and -15C overnight.

There was heavy rain in Sussex NB overnight, and there is now considerable flooding. They are rescuing people from there homes by boat. Lots of high wind too. About 8,000 NB Power customers are currently off line.

Sussex NB this morning.

Apparently Sussex received over 200 mm of rain with this storm event, which, on top of snow melt, has flooded the town.

We got 40-50 mm of rain here in Moncton. Sussex is only about 80 km away.

Flooding is a chronic issue down there. The town lies in a valley at the confluence of several tributaries of the Kennebecasis River.

Was there any warning of flooding for that area? We had rain the last couple of days and a thunderstorm, but there wasn't like a true downpour. So I was surprised when I walked along the river yesterday that it was higher than I expected. But not flood type level.

There was a heavy rainfall warning (for up to 100 mm or rain), which included some mutterings about the potential for flooding, but no actual flash flood warning.

The cold front has now reached Labrador. It should hit us in town overnight.

I'm not looking forward to it. Past two days have been so pleasurable with reliably above freezing temps. It wasn't even warm. Just deliciously mild.

TWN has Toronto hitting 17 next Tuesday, which is bizarre as EC is calling for just 9.

Could be flirting with our first 20 of the year.

After that, we fall into a more seasonal (albeit still slightly above) pattern - highs between 5-9, lows just above freezing.

Today could be the last real winter like day we have this season; currently -4, mostly cloudy, a sharp wind.

EC has Windsor as sunny and 21 on Monday, would be their second 20 of the year by March 4th. Pretty nuts!

Sounds similar to our situation in NS last summer. IIRC, the potential for flooding wasn't overly broadcast, and it took many people by surprise.

We had a wind/rain event in NS last night. In Halifax it was less about the rain, though, and more about the wind, with gusts in the 100 km/h range. It was hard to sleep with the wind gusts, and about 7am I heard a thud, which turned out to be a chunk of a large pine tree breaking off and striking my neighbour's deck. These pine trees are quite large, some with trunks in the vicinity of 1 - 2 feet in diameter, but I've noticed a propensity of them to just break off in heavy winds, as opposed to uprooting, which you'd expect. I've seen several of them do this over the past few years, and this was confirmed by an arborist that I had doing some work for me last summer.

Anyhow... glad that's done. Hopefully we get a break until the next one occurs.

The snowbanks are half the height they were just a couple of days ago. It's surprising - even up in Mount Pearl around my parents' place, it's down to a normal-looking amount. Dad says it was the fog and the fact there was no frost in the ground before it fell.

Holy F - this was the least accurate weather forecast of anywhere I’ve been in the last 15+ years.
Weather network forecast for Calgary up to this morning was calling for 5C and sunny this afternoon. Took my daughter to the zoo with her grandma who is visiting town. Actual temperature in town this afternoon was/is -5C, with a wind chill much lower.

It was plus 11 in the south end at 1 PM while the north end was -6 😂

As expected, that intense cold snap this January, in combination with occurring suddenly after a sustained mild stretch, and still recovering from the extreme cold snap of December 2021 and the extreme heat dome of June 2021, has been disastrous for wineries and to a lesser extent orchards in the Okanagan.

In areas, grape buds this year may have been 97 to 99% destroyed…

That January cold snap around Vancouver also really hit a lot of the plants around the downtown peninsula hard.
This is probably the least flowery Jan/Feb that I've seen in a long time.

As usual the daffodils at Sunset Beach were coming out in early January but then I think they got mostly wiped out. They are very sparse this year.
And just about every other kind of bloom or blossom seems to be a fraction of what it had been in past years.
The camellias that I've seen blooming have freezer burns.

Even moderately hardy evergreen trees, bushes and shrubs have been shedding a lot of leaves.
