305 West 5th would also be visible there poking above the Colorado Tower, between The Austonian and 6 X Guadalupe. We just don't have any renderings of it yet.

And 5th and Brazos would be pretty prominent in this view, too.

I wish the convention center didn't chip away at some of downtown's continuity. I wonder what that area would've been like if it were built slightly more peripheral to the city center, rather than its current location.

Speaking of this, I was at the pool level of the Fairmont recently and the convention center was front and center from there. It's so big.

If we could move our convention center up towards the dead zone of downtown between 35 and the capital that would be ideal.

But they need to be near CBDs and bring in lots of hotel/bar/restaurant customers. So, it's easy to want to get rid of em, but they also help develop cities.

Honestly, with each new hotel that is built nearby, the odds of it being fully replaced/relocated are slimmer and slimmer. However I hope that they take a note from the renovations and expansions of the Moscone in San Francisco and Charlotte's facility, and perhaps consider expanding up rather than further out. Aside from not increasing its overall footprint, the sin of every gradually-expanded convention center is the discontinuity of the architecture between wings built at different times. An upward increase of space and associated renovation stands to better retain an overall design scheme.

I was just thinking about how great the Marriott and the Thompson/Tommie will be at pushing the downtown mass outward towards the east. I wouldn't be upset at a row of dynamically-designed hotels and residential buildings along the west side of Trinity at some point in the future. It would be better to let those blocks develop beside the convention center than be swallowed up by more of it.

Hey guys, just added 5th and Brazos to this image. This was really difficult to add. All the existing renders out there do not provide an adequate overview of this building. Same goes with some other buildings out there. Many of them are either bird eye views or ground level views. Those are the ones that are hard to add.

That one would be hard to add at this point. What about 300 Colorado? Would that be visible from this angle?

Yes, it should be visible, although, not as much as 305 West 5th would be.

300 Colorado from this angle would appear behind and to the left of the Colorado Tower with The Austonian blocking some of the view of it.

The photo you're using was taken from 70 Rainey. If it was taken from the south side of the building, then less of 300 Colorado would show up. If it was taken from the north end of 70 Rainey, then more of it would show up.

I've been using Google Earth to plot the sightlines.

6 X Guadalupe should also be a bit farther to the right so that it's centered behind the Four Seasons Residences.

Yup, just moved 6X Guadalupe to the right, I'd say above the left portion of the Four Seasons. Judging by the gaps between buildings, this is probably taken from the north end of 70 Rainey.

In some ways, the best place for the CC to expand would be east, across Red River. Cover Waller Creek, and fill Palm Park completely. Surround the Fairmont, and go right up to the I35 frontage road. Oh and incorporate the history Palm School into the new building.

I realize there's a level of heresy there (lose a park? cover up a creek? for shame!) but it works in a lot of ways. It leaves those prime blocks west of the existing CC for high rise development. It puts quality low-rise development overtop property that's condemned to be underdeveloped by our CVCs. Palm Park isn't a great park precisely because it's segregated off from where people actually are -- this would (IMO) put that space to better use. It could feasibly reclaim a couple of blocks worth of Waller Creek that are grimy and gross, currently. Could even integrate it into the design in cool ways. And from a practical, industry standpoint, the new space would have a larger unbroken footprint -- not just more exhibit halls, but bigger halls than what we'll see on the western expansion -- so we could potentially start bringing different events to the city. Also: freight and drive-in access to the CC from I35 would remain excellent.

But of course that's just Sim City talk. We're expanding West, and as soon as the UT study comes out I feel pretty certain that Adler's going to push it forward as quickly as he can.

As far as I know at this time, the CC expansion will be much like what we've seen so far. It will be several stories high -- 5 or 6? -- with a green roof that's open to the public as a "park" of sorts. In H2Henry's pic above, it should be at least as tall as the Marriott's podium. It will be bookended between the new Marriott and the Railyard Condos (which are being redeveloped separately). There will be a separate loading dock below street level; there will be lots of spaces for ground floor retail. It will not connect via skywalk over Trinity. Trinity will remain open to traffic.

Longer term planning suggests that after the expansion is finished, the city could potentially look to rebuild the old building to support multiple levels. That's waaaaay into the future, but from what I hear it's part of the conversation.
