And just when I was about to ask, "what is it that VDT is working on in town at the moment?".
They designed Vue53 as well.

Eehhhh. Just because it's VDTA doesn't make it great. Personally, it's rather uninspiring.

What i like about it is the fact that its infil, but its not treated with the mindset "its just infil" it looks like there was actual care to create a clean design, and i appreicate that, not every building can be a star

Though 237 East Ontario first made me think of my favorite childhood building set:

there's actually a nice interplay with the older neighbor across the street:

Wow, Mr. D... what an awesome looking toy! Can't believe you grew up with that and didn't become an architect (or better yet, a developer).

Just speaking for myself, of course, I don't think it's great due to it being a VDTA design, I think it's great because it's great, AND unsurprisingly, it is indeed a VDTA design....

I think the render might be skewing my opinion of it because I don't think it looks very special. The rendering looks like it's not good quality for the building itself - as if someone went in on MSPaint and drew the black borders around the windows too.

Dirt Moving at 215 West Hubbard
Written by Editor on December 8, 2015

Quote:
Just three days after we told you that the Chicago Plan Commission approved the construction of a 22-story residential block and a companion office building at 205 West Hubbard, things are starting to happen in that corner of River North. The Chicago Architecture Blog’s Zachary Pollack came across soil sampling crews sampling the soil where the new skyscraper project will rise.
We’re used to seeing soil sampling done with a great big derrick, usually pivoting off the back of a dirty red truck. This time, it’s a couple of guys rolling around with Frankenstein’s four-wheeler. The use of the smaller contraption may be because this is still an active parking lot, or maybe because of the busy elevated CTA tracks that cut the northeast corner of this property. Either way, it’s new to us.

article

I thought they just repaved the lot.

Yeah, that Wells Street proposal is a really odd duck. The design has a 1.5-story podium as if to say, "look, I'm respecting the scale of the neighborhood!" Except that Wells Street is mostly 2-3 story buildings with upper-level windows.

Ironically, a taller podium coupled with the setback of the tower would help conceal the tower from the street.

^Re: Wells. If you go to the DNA article, they show alternative designs. Not pretty.

The developer's website says 2016 construction, but I haven't heard anything about them starting sales...

I'm gonna be surprised if this one happens. They've had approval for 3 yrs in the best market the west loop has ever had.
I didn't really like Fitzgerald's dig at P+W. It would be nice if they would design something daring for once and then maybe they'd be up for an award. And the center of Chicago now is not Madison and the Kennedy

Nice work as usual, BVictor. I like it. It reminds me of something else, but I'm not quite sure what.

VDTA is also working with Tishman on the redevelopment of the Amalgamated Bank building on State Street in the Loop. I wish they'd propose something more ambitious (taller) there.

Added 237 East Ontario to pg 1. (Thanks BVic).

Spyguy, any additional info regarding the Amalgamated Bank development? Is the developer pushing for a lower building ([presumably)?

Basically just converting the lower 3 floors into retail, changing the facade a bit. It's not very exciting.

Yeah I saw the Tishman's website too... didn't think much of it.

Located in the heart of Chicago's iconic State Street Corridor, 100 and 112 South State Street are adjacent office and retail properties totalling 78,000 square feet. Situated on the southwest corner of State and Monroe streets, the properties are benefited by abundant retail, office, residential and university demand generators. The properties are currently in the early planning stages of being transformed into one word-class flagship retail building.

It's an improvement but still a wasted opportunity. I suppose the silver lining here is that it will remain available for future development. Could easily see them tearing that down to build something bigger in ~10-15 years if the market is there for it.
