[QUOTE=smain;10474048]I don't think it's a bridge. I know they are reworking the intersection of University and Reynolds.[/QUOTE

The bridge will be close to where University Parkway and Cherry Street split at the bottom of the hill. Near the car dealership.

Greater Winston-Salem Inc. and Visit Winston-Salem are combining to develop a “Strategic Action Plan” for the city over the next 12 to 16 months, saying it’s a “crucial time for our community.”

The groups hired the Kimley-Horn consulting firm to guide the process. Clarity of Place, the advisory services arm of tourism marketing firm Longwoods International, is also advising local officials.

“This plan gives us the chance to think boldly about Winston-Salem’s future and the ways we can elevate our community for the long term,” says Mike Lancaster, president of Blum Construction and chair of the Greater Winston-Salem Inc. board of directors. “By aligning resources and listening to the voices of our residents and businesses, we can create a roadmap that strengthens our economy, supports families, and ensures that Winston-Salem continues to thrive as a place people are proud to call home.”

Per Scott Sexton, the Grounds developers are now asking for $8MM. Hopefully, the request is denied. $8MM is a ridiculous amount to be out of balance at this stage of the project. The developers can figure it out. I’d imagine there ie a contract with WFU that would prevent them from walking away.

I agree. A project that is approaching a quarter billion should not need to beg for $8 million.

I think there has been a huge shift this summer in the citizens’ view about Winston leadership. Maybe it’s just a social media phenomenon, but people are increasingly negative and questioning of the direction of the City. The compound impact of the Hanesbrand sales, restaurant closings, a bloody week in August, The Grounds begging for millions, the sudden amphitheater plans, downtown parking fees, and the horrendous WS/FC Schools scandal have created a crisis of confidence that is leading people to openly and loudly dissent from business as usual.

Projects & Construction:
I want to thank the photographers and local businesses, sharing updates on projects, who make this thread possible. Without you, these updates won't happen. I don't make any money from this and these updates are to share, with both locals and out-of-towners, what is happening in the city they love. Many people reading this are far-away and this allows them to see the projects. If you can, please support any local businesses or follow social pages sharing photographs and thank them.

So many nice updates, in today's post, on our favorite projects! Lets get updated!

Salem Bottling Works:
The slaberia has opened and yes, my source from May 5, 2024 was correct, it's a pizza restaurant. They are calling it Grandpa Joe's. It's based on (but not exactly like) the pizza from an Ohio-style pizzeria called Wedgewood Pizza. Yes, if you followed this thread, you knew (last year!) a pizza restaurant was opening here. I think that getting an amphitheater here would be a great thing for Jeffrey Adams and really just for downtown in general,” said General Manager Matthew Saseen.
Another downtown employee of Washington Perks said the project offers more benefits than drawbacks. “I think having an amphitheater built around here would definitely be more positive than negative,” said Oscar Fisette.
At The Downtown Grille, across the street from the proposed site, General Manager Jon Willis said he expects the amphitheater to be good for business. His only slight concern — parking.
“But if you really think about it, parking’s always a concern whenever you’re really talking about that many people being displaced into an area,” Willis said.

I think the combo of the WSFCS debacle and massive increase in property taxes for many residents were deeply animating for folks all over the county. That cast a pallor over everything else, and even small annoyances were amplified.

Yep. I forgot about the skyrocketing property taxes. Ironically, the Journal had an editorial in August lamenting that Winston residents were far too detached and chill about city government, in stark comparison to raucous Greensboro. Well, I think Winston residents have suddenly arisen with pitchforks and torches.

A vote on a lease request for a proposed amphitheater in downtown Winston-Salem has passed.

HOORAY! Sensible thing to do and only two nays, but I reckon it passed because no money was involved. There might yet be hope.

Council voted 6-2 in support of the project, with Barbara Burke and Scott Andree-Bowen voting no. Burke introduced a motion to delay a decision until October.

A delay, Burke said, “would give the developers, Mr. Flow and others an opportunity to meet with the residents at Crystal towers, answer their questions, hear their concerns.”

A United Kingdom industrial chemicals manufacturer is under consideration for an economic-incentive packages from Winston-Salem City Council for a pledge of 30 jobs and a $5.63 million capital investment.

Council has set a 6 p.m. Sept. 15 public hearing to address what has been identified as "Project Touchdown." The Finance committee will address the request at Monday's 4 p.m. meeting.

According to the city's legal notice, the unidentified company is requesting up to $57,168 in performance-based incentives over five years to help pay for its capital investment expenses.

Don Flow, et al won the battle, but his good will with the community is bruised

Quote:
To state what should be patently obvious, Crystal Towers was an afterthought, if it was thought about at all.

The city-owned property in question is directly across the street from Crystal Towers, whose residents are elderly people on fixed incomes.

This means the developers will be getting feedback from the people who stand to be affected the most when their voices will matter the least.

Adding insult to this injury is the fact the two partners behind the venture, Winston-Salem businessman Don Flow and Mocksville concert promoter Jim Brammer, did make time to consider input from various other stakeholders in advance of the council vote, including First Baptist Church as well as restaurants and businesses. Crystal Towers apparently didn’t make that list.
