I don't understand this mentality, and I don't mean to point you out in particular, but I've seen it in posting from Retail-Insider.com as well.

I speak as someone who is half Canadian, although I haven't lived in Canada since the 1970's, I have a fondness for all things Canada. I find it disturbing that there seems to be a certain amount of glee in seeing Target fail. I believe Target was very foolish in the manner that they expanded in to Canada, but to see them fail and put so many Canadians out of work is sad to me.

Regarding Nordstrom, I don't see any arrogance in the manner that they are expanding. They are hiring Canadian managers, they are studying the market judiciously, and they are tailoring their stores to their individual markets. I'm going to guess that if you were to go to the Calgary store and then immediately go to the Vancouver store (when it opens) you will find significant difference, all market related.

OFF TOPIC - The questions regarding Nordstrom aren't the really same as for Target (not the same customers). The questions for Nordstrom relate to the depth of the Canadian high end market with Holt Renfrew, Nordstrom, Saks 5th Ave and to a certain extent Hudson's Bay. Albeit 15 years ago and larger scale, Eaton's tried to go high end in the same space Nordstrom will occupy, and failed. Canadians love their sales, and Nordstrom doesn't have many sales.

Common mentality among Canadians to wish suffering or demise on big corporations -- especially if they're American.

Yes it sure is. It's exceeding plan and has been doing so since it first opened. I'm curious how well the Ottawa store will do when it opens in early March.

Exactly. Their approach to entering Canada is more thought out. In fact, Calgary's store is being closely monitored to see what works / what doesn't so that any changes can be made before any new stores open.

In downtown Seattle they have Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack adjacent to each other.

In Vancouver - do you think the Rack would discourage tight-fisted Canadians from spending in the full line store?
I think it would be safer for them to open the Rack stores in other locations to allow the full line store to develop a customer base.

Damn, this building used to be brutal! It was actually so ugly, that I never took proper photos of it to commemorate it in the future.

yeah, I think I'm going to need something to couteract the nausea ...

Ok, a lot of people now scorn the new one, calling it a busy mess, among other things.

Yes, it could be improved, IMO.
First, take that icky superficial spandrelly "CF" glass oblong wrap-around structure off on each corner at Robson right off.
Incorporate Cadillac Fairview in a subtle, but perhaps eye-catching (small
LED lite dymbol ?????) ..... (I'll leave that to the technicians)

>> On the still-empty-and-sterile Howe side, there's a downramp at the Robson corner,
and there's really nothing to eliminate this at present.
It's there: gotta make do with it.

But higher up on Howe, where it sort of passes close to, and under the TD Tower, perhaps a semicircular roof arcade could be built, (bamboo, wood, steel, you choose) ...lit up at night,
plants of all seasons growing in there; really giving life and light to that part of the West side of the building.

Pics by me today.

Second skin almost done on protruding box.
You can see the remaining panes up on the roof.
The interior studs are still there in Nordstrom behind the corner windows.

Pics by me today:

They painted the awning brackets a light gray - i.e. different than the taupe of the mullions (or the gutter?)

The gutter will cover the bolts, so the overall look will be clean.

Thanks for the pics.

The awning looks good and will hide the spandrel somewhat from street level.
